About two months ago, as I was pulling into the garage with my other vehicle, I noticed rust on both sides of the chrome rear bumper of my then 1-month-old, not made a payment on it yet Tacoma. This bumper was replaced by the dealer with no issues.

You can see the rust here: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/63668-rear-chrome-bumper-rusting-out.html#post1293635
This is not my bumper, but it is the same situation. A situation many people seem to have happening.

Well, now the new bumper is rusting too, same as the old one did. I went to the dealer, and the service manager gave me all kinds of crap about "didn't we just replace your bumper" and so forth. He asked me if I waxed it. I told him no, I've never heard of waxing chrome. I polish it with a chrome polish when I wax the truck (which is every other week, since I have access to a huge heated apparatus bay).

Long story short, he got all moody and went out and waxed the hell out of the rusty part of the bumper(not sure what that does for the rust on the inside), removing the rust. I was pissed off enough about the fact that they weren't replacing it that I just left, and will deal with another dealership from now on.

That lasted about a day, and now it's rusty as hell again.

My question is: am I a fool, and I should be waxing my chrome bumper every other day or it will rust, or is the service manager an ass, and just doesn't want to own up to the fact that Toyota chrome plating for the 2010's is crap?

Thanks in advance for your constructive criticism.

I'd say take it back, let it get 'fixed' once more, then get a lemon law on it. If the bumper's already rusting this fast, what else is too?

I had a 97 that did not have any rust and I hardly ever washed my truck. I'm in AZ so that might have something to do with it.

I would say that it is Toyota's fault and they should give you a new one. If the body kept rusting because of shitty paint they would replace that wouldn't they?

Mine is 1 1/2 years old and not a speck of rust. Not saying that it won't ever happen but it sounds like whoever is making these is using junk metals in the process. I do use regular wax on the outside of mine and in the fall I spray WD-40 on the inside of it.

I spray the WD-40 on the inside of the bumper, not the chrome outside.

I wouldn't repair anything. IT'S A NEW TRUCK! Having said that...if your interested in changing out a bumper I would make deal to buy the bumper you want at your expense and let them install it free...then your done with it. If u don't want to do that....learn their first names...sounds like your going to become good friends....:D

I'd LOVE to go color matched. Actually, at the first replacement, I asked them if they could order a Pyrite Mica bumper instead of chrome, because I hate the chrome look on the truck. I was told they could only order the same part that was on the truck for warranty repairs.

I didn't think I was doing anything wrong, care-wise, and I appreciate the confirmation. I'm going to try a different dealership for another replacement, and work from there I guess.

As far as sanding and painting goes, are you talking color matched spray can or auto-body shop sandblast and professional paint job? Spray can I could justify the cost, but professional paint - there's performance things I want to do to the truck before I drop money on cosmetics.

Thanks again for the replies people.

    I'm new to this forum.

I bought a brand new 2010 Tacoma in late Dec 2009 that was built in Fremont, Ca (BTW the manufacturing site of the previous rusty recalled Tacomas a few years ago). With less than 1000 miles on the ODO, I noticed a handful of small rust spots on the bottom of the rear bumper on the far left and right sides (very similar to the photo at the top of this thread). I also noticed that the bottom attachment screws appear rusty. The rust could be easily wiped off with a cloth but would soon reappear in the same spots after a few days. No obvious dings can be seen at the rust spots. I took dated pictures and showed it to the Dealer who was clueless. Told them I'd have the look at it during the first oil change. Now a month later and with almost 2000 miles they appear to be getting worse and harder to wipe off.

I suspect will all the bad press Toyota is receiving should I expect the dealer replace the bumper under warranty without fuss? After all they boast (bumper-to-bumper ;)). I wonder the root cause of this issue and what else might be rusting underneath that is more critical.

    Mike

    Honestly.

The only way they will get the message and get the supplier to cut the shit and make 'em right is when they end up supplying free ones repeatedly.

The dealers anger is misplaced and he needs a reality check and to re-direct it at the the Mothership who then directs it at the supplier. They will eventually get the message.
