Heated seat wiring help

    I am easily the biggest newb when it comes to wiring in a vehicle and I need some quick help if anyone has done this. I bought the kit and Im staring at it in my living room ready to throw it in the garbage. Here is what I have and I am trying to understand the basics of where to put the small fuse thing with the two red wires. I get that I can just leave the relay where ever, hook the seats up, and the ground with the black wire, but how do I hook the red wire up and where is the best place? I see videos but they use vocabulary I never heard of before

    Did your heater happen to come with a schematic? It would be easier to explain what the schematic is showing.

    IMG_0148.jpg One side of the inline fuse will connect to where you are getting power (could be direct from the battery or where you are splicing into your power source). The inline fuse should be placed as close as possible to the power source so that as much of the downstream wiring (wiring to pin 30 on the relay and beyond) is protected. The other side of the inline fuse connects to pin 30 on the relay. Trace the wires on the harness to determine where they connect to and that will determine where to place the inline fuse.

    Ideally you will also have a fuse connected to relay "control" side. That fuse only needs to be rated at an amp or two since this is the "control" signal and not much electrical current will flow through it.

    Here is where the pins on the relay connect:
    86: Control signal. This will likely come from a switch which turns on the seat heaters. If there is an inline fuse it should be placed between the power source and the switch to protect as much downstream wiring as possible.
    85: Ground/chassis (battery negative)
    30: Power source. The inline fuse should be placed between this pin and the power source.
    87: This connects to the positive side of the load (seat heaters in your case). When the relay is energized ("control" signal on) pin 30 connects to pin 87 on the relay.
    87a: Five pin relays have this. Four pin relays don't use this.

    Make sure you crimp everything nice and tight. Use insulated butt splices (permanent connections) or insulated bullet connections (removable connections) and the correct crimp tool. You can find these at your local hardware store.

    I would run the red wire straight from the battery or a new circuit in the fuse panel. Seat heaters draw enough amps that they should not be tied into another circuit like cigarette lighter or such.

    There must be a switch involved somewhere. Is there something that regulates the heater? That's why I was wondering about a schematic.

    You need a relay between main power and heater. Everything will go to and from the relay.

    So I need a second relay? Just place it between where I have the red wire going to battery?

    That looks correct to me. You have the relay so I don't see why you would need another one. Use a ring terminal and come right off the positive post bolt. The reason you have 2 red wires that you need to join is because you can't get the fuse through a firewall grommet. So wire it together after you run the wire.

    No. Main power goes to one side of normally open on relay. Heater goes to other normally open. From the switch would go to the 12v side of relay (relay coil). Then ground to ground off relay.

    This is assuming no type of heater regulator.

    That in the center is the 12v relay.

    EDIT- The 12v supply to the switch should be from something that becomes hot once the truck is on, that way there's no chance of draining the battery.

    To explain how the relay works;

    •Main power comes to the common side (12v) of relay.
    •The normally open side is connected to the heater.
    •The common and normally open will connect when turned on.
    •The switch is connected to the coil power. When you turn your switch to the on position, it sends power to the relay coil and back out through the ground. When the coil is powered it closes the normally open contact and sends power to your heater.

    When you look at the drawing, that is a literal layout of how everything will get connected. Try not to let the relay confuse you. Just hook up as its shown. The relay will have identifications for each connection. If it has a normal closed connection, don't use that one.

    If you still feel uncomfortable with it, try to find a friend or someone that feels confident with it. Its certainly not worth burning up a wire harness.
