Now, anyone want to recommend a shop to regear in South Florida? Moving to FW/DFW in a year so that's an option later. Probably won't have 10K miles on the 2017 by then either.

I agree it drives better but when hitting a hill it still struggles..

Another advantage that is often missed is that lower gears, numerically higher, reducing engine load at any given speed/ rpm. So even if you are turning higher rpm, the engine is working less meaning better mpg. Granted there is a trade off, driving everywhere at 4,500rpm isn't going help mpg's any.

The tall 6th in the autos should compensate for the 4.88's pretty well even with 33's.

Also, I always take my axles/ 3rd member in to get regeared, that way you are saving on the labor of paying them to pull everything. Rear End Specialties here in the Bay Area charges $200 for gears and locker per axle, and $250 if it's an ARB. I've been using them for years on countless vehicles.

They charged $500 for the front and $450 in rear for labor. I just got it done by them.

Also, as far as MPG. I haven't seen any changes as far as calculation on my dash.

A weekend warrior can't install gears?

I guess this was the weekend warrior reference.

Changing gears isn't that hard, but you need special tools and know how. Gears seem simple, but they aren't.

It just took my shop 3 days to get a 3rd gen Toyota gear swap done. Sometimes it's harder then others.

This thread caught my attention mainly because I figured a re-gear would likely help with the power/torque and acceleration in each gear. In reading, it sounds like the gear hunting was improved with the 4.88. I have an auto and wanted to ask a couple questions:

    - Why did the AT come in 3.9 and the MT in 4.3?
    - For someone not interested in going with larger tires and not hauling or towing much, but looking to improve the gear hunting (and any off-road benefits), is the 4.3 FD a better suited gear vs the 4.88?

For me personally, I hate this gear hunting thing so much that I would put 488 on stock tires..

Quick question for the guys that have gear swapped to 4.88's with a manual. How is 6th gear working out for ya (rpm's, can you keep it in 6th when you used to have to down shift on certain grades). How has the regear helped out with reverse. If i had one complaint so far its reverse and how high geared it is. Ive had to back up a few hills up in the mountains to move over for peeps and to turn around and holy shit I feel like im going to burn the clutch up. I just go into 4low now to do it.

Why would it not fix the noise. You're replacing the gears and bearings

Yes but the human body suggests the almighty is a Civil engineer... as only a Civil would build a sewage treatment plant in a recreation area.

I always liked that quip.... back to the real thread. (Sorry.)

Aussie makes a good point. It will be interesting to see if any howl returns in the first 10k miles and what provokes the howl.

If the noise returns we know it's not as simple as a gear or Bearing issue

    Exactly.

Either way, I guess the "re-gear guys" can be the beta testers for Toyota.

My sincere thanks in advance, gentlemen.
