Is there such a thing as a front tube bumper that will fit over factory bumper and protect truck for light off-roading and save my front end from a wild board or a deer like I have hit here in TX. The birds I've hit have bounced off, and the only thing I've hit and has lived was a cat and I'm not sure how long it lived after that.

Never hit a dog, thank goodness. I'm not a bad driver or a intentionally mean driver just unlucky with a lot of TX back road miles.

I've seen one but don't remember who makes it. Someone on here has one. I don't know how much it's really going to protect the front bumper though.

Thanks, I saw those, I wonder if they would fold in with the weight of a larger animal? How much weight can you add with a new bumper without affecting the driver/perfomance/etc of the truck?

You wouldn't have to worry about the weight of one of those on a stock truck. I'm sure they weigh less than a brush guard. I would imagine they are thin tubing and would still damage the bumper if you hit a large animal.

Only thing I would imagine holding up to something like a deer would be a plate bumper.

Anything that fits over the stock bumper is basically for looks and to mount lights on.

If you want better protection you'll need to step up to an aftermarket plate or hybrid bumper.

Ok, new Q's. I emailed Pelfrey about their hybrid bumper it looks pretty animal proof, but they said my factory for lights won't work with the bumper and I need 700# coil overs. Do yall think this is necessary? I won't be adding a winch and the bumper weighs approx 120#s.

Are the coil overs something, if necessary a complete poser noob could add all by their lonesome?

    Thanks

My plate bumper weighs about the same and I'm running OME 885 coils in the front and can see it's starting to pull the front down some so yes you will need them. Stock will drop worse.

Yes you can install coil overs very easily. I installed my entire lift kit with new UCA's and new leaf springs and had never done a lift kit before.

Your front end will start sagging without new coils/coilovers

If you want to maintain roughly stock height, you could put on OME 884 springs with OME shocks. Even with the bumper, that'll give you a little lift in the front, so you'll probably want to put on an "add a leaf" in the back. That'll add to your comfortable load carrying capacity as well.

I'll agree with the gang.... For real protection get a real front bumper.

On my 1996 tacoma - I had a WAAG Grille Guard on it. I can honestly say.....it was an impressive piece. I didn't expect it to work miracles, but it was pretty damn stout for offroading. Here's a picture of it. Granted, that was probably 15 years ago. They probably don't make 'em like they used to.

I actually slightly bent the bottom crossbrace and it never flinched. Obviously, it doesn't cover the whole bumper....
I got it just for 'basic' offroading abuse and it did exactly what I needed it to do. I eventually bought a real bumper anyway..... TJM

No Sir, I do my best to avoid them, but sometimes at speed its better to go over them instead of into an oncoming semi or into a tree. I have never intentionally run over anything. I'm usually the one getting honked at 'cause I'm getting a dog out of the street or helping a turtle cross the road a little faster.

I've been running the avid bumper for a couple years now.Ive only come in contact with a deer this far.I would say the deer weighed 120-140..I was traveling about 55 and the deer hit where the passenger side foglight is.No damage to my bumper or front end other then a broken fog lamp.

Email avid and see what he has to say. He might be willing to beef up one of his bumper guards for you, can't hurt to ask. He does to notch work! The shop is local to me and he just installed my sliders, they are beefy and very well made

    Posting up late.
Any word of the new third gen is beefy enough to take a hit? They added a skid plate to it and looks gnarly.

Here is the option we would suggest. weight is about 75lbs so it will not necessarily "require" adding HD coil springs. Bumper bolts directly to the frame rails up front so its as stout as a full replacement bumper without all of the weight. Plus you get the added protection of a bullbar and some heavy duty recovery points as well. And of course you could mount a winch and LED light inside if you ever decided you need it.

How tough is the install? Will I be hacking that middle section of my bumper off?
