Heated seat wiring help

I edited my post about the drawing so you don't take power directly from the battery to the switch. Get in from something that gets power once the truck is turned on, so it can't drain the battery if the truck is off.

 

Ok so your saying I DONT need an extra relay? Heres the one I have now

 

Just got back from the gym. Moondeath, that schematic is exactly what I was thinking. I think it might help the OP if you could add the relay pin numbers to the schematic.

 

That is the only relay you'll need for this install. You won't have to connect anything to pin 87a. This relay is the 5-pin version. If pin 87a is exposed I'd put a piece of adhesive heat shrink on it so that it doesn't inadvertently short to one of the other wires.

 

This looks already wired up? The only thing left is just the red which from your drawing I should connect to the fuse and then tap into something like the ignition (or any other idea where to tap to), then just whack the black one to a ground on the truck? That seems too simple?

 

You still need a switch, otherwise the heater will be on all the time. By the looks of the relay, all you need is a power source, and a ground. So power from an ignition source, then to fuse, then to switch, then to relay.

 

Yes, pin numbers would have been helpful.

 

There is a switch. It is the round toggle. You can see it in the pictures op posted.

 

Ah, I didn't see it. Then it should just need hooked to a power source and the ground grounded.

 

Based on the photos of the relay it looks like pins 30 and 86 are connected together. If this is the case then if the red wire is hooked up directly to the battery (through inline fuse) the seat heaters can be left on even with the truck turned off. That's bad since this could drain your battery. It doens't appear pin 87a can inadvertently short to any other wires.

Thinking about it some more it's okay for pin 30 to be connected to the battery (through an inline fuse).

Pin 86 should be connected to a power source which is present only when the vehicle is turned on. You should be able to find a fuse behind the coin tray to tap into for this. You will need an add-a-fuse (available at an auto parts store; make sure to buy a low profile mini add-a-fuse; use 2amp low profile mini fuse). You would also need to make some modifications at the relay wiring.

If you decide you want to separate the signals on pins 30 and 86 let me know and I'll draw something up.

 

Yes, you definitely want it hooked to something that only turns on when the truck turns on. Now that I'm thinking about it, the downs side to this is the power source needs to be large enough to power the heating coils. Otherwise it will blow one of the factory fuses because it isn't set up for it.

To be honest, my opinion is the heater power source and the relay power source should be separate.

 

Ok so I shouldnt just tap in somewhere like the cig lighter? I never use it ever so would it have enough power?

 

It may, check the fuse for the cig lighter and see if the amperage is rated the same or higher than your heater.

 

Where do I see that? The relay? Says 12vdc and 40a

 

Is that what's on the relay? That just means the relay is good for up to 12 volts and 40 amps. I guess your heater didn't come with any paper work, huh. lol. It would be on there if it had. Look at the fuse that is for the cig lighter and see what the number is, that's its amp rating.

That inline fuse you are going to install with the heater, did that come with the heater, or did you get that separate? If it came with it, see what the amp raring is in that fuse.

 

yes came with it and its a 10

 

Ok, good. That's what we'll go by. See what that cig lighter fuse is. Hopefully its 10 or higher.

 

I just checked. Its under power outlet. 15 amps, so you should be good to splice to that.

 

awesome thanks man! So when I splice I can just get some sort of connection at the store to make it clean right? I never did it before actually. Something like this T tap?

 

Yes, there are a few different types of wire taps you can use. What I do is rap it with electrical tape after its on so it doesn't come apart and keeps it insulated.
