How well is that antenna location working for your radio?

It works great. I'll put the analyzer on it when I get a chance and see what it looks like. Once I do I'll post pics.

I have the control head of my Yaesu FT-8800R mounted with a Scosche "Magic Mount" magnet mount. The radio is under the driver's seat and antenna is a Diamond NR770 with a magmount on the roof. With the "Magic Mount", I pretty quickly swap in my Icom IC-7000, but I haven't figured what I want to do for a mobile HF antenna just yet.

    For others interested in KD0QDQ's mount, it's a CP-5NMO.

If you're referring to OP's mount, that's incorrect. It's a CVANTPF. I've got one coming this week.

Mine is mounted with the speaker face down... should it be the other way around? Looks to me like the fins are part of the heat sink, and should face up. Your advice? And thanks so much for this idea!

Currently have only a FT2900 2M, it is mounted just in front of the drivers seat (like an old CB mount) attached to the "hump" by the shifter. next will be a ft857d or 859, that tx unit will be under the seat, I will have a remote speaker to overcome mounting issues. I plan on mounting either a tar heel or ATS120a on drivers side access door, like the 2m is. Bye the way new call sign is KI7HKG.

Not bad. Just find a club that's got a test schedule and study. I got the question bank book and studied that.

I took a two day class with test. True knowledge comes after you get the legalities out of the way. Take a class -join a club (or the other way around), they will help you with the liscense and make suggestions for a radio.....then get on the air! 73s

I mounted mine with the heat sink down in order to have more free air movement. It has a fan too so it does get cooled good.

The bright side is it's easy to flip if I feel the need. So where did you find a good ground inside the truck? I still have not run my ground wire.

I ran 14ga zip cord and the ground goes directly to the battery as does the 12V lead.

Very nice, that's the same spot that I had picked out for when I upgrade to a mobile unit.

What are you using the APRS for, mainly just tracking?
