Lets say someone did a SAS to Dana 44 axles front and back (which many taco people have done).

Then lets say that someone won the lotto, married into a very wealthy family or robbed a bank (...make that 2 or 3 banks).

And then that person ordered bolt on portal axles for jeeps from Wolfgang Tibus: http://www.killeraxles.com/bolt_on_portale_e.html

    Tibus Jeep Dana 44 01.jpg portale_001.jpg

    and 'bolted um on'
    Would it work?
I assumed portals could not work on leaf springs but i saw examples of volvo and unimog axles on leafs. I have killed too many hours trying to find reasons that this would or would not work and have reached the point of marginal return. So fire away?

Why do you "ASSume" portals would not work with leaf springs? Yes it could be done. Anything can be done with enough money, ingenuity, and time.

And with that much money, it should be linked anyway, so there would be no leaves.

Only because the portal axle vehicles i have knowledge of were all coil. The German company i linked to lists kits for several vehicles, none are leaf. But the Volvo C303 had rear leaf and it was portal. And I saw this (attachment-3.jpg ) on the hinter web and if some one made it and put it on a trailer and posted the photos on the internet it must work perfectly.

I only point out "leaf springs" because it is the simplest way to slap dana44s on a taco.

Leafs can work, but depending on the spring rate, may need some type of link to prevent axle wrap which would be more prevalent with this type of axle set up. But it can be done.

ok, fine, so this hypothetical guy has to divorce the crazy rich wife and finish this project the the salary of a fish biologist.

    I Agree.

Can you give examples of linked systems on gen 1 tacos? We are already entering the realm of it being easier and cheaper to switch to a different vehicle, this is why we are talking about that hypothetical rich guy not me.

Something as simple as a traction bar close to the diff. I think it is ATO that makes one for second gens. Would not be overly difficult to make one for a first gen. Any and all fab work required to do an actual four link set up on both ends is still going to be but a fraction of the cost to adding portal axles.

like said. the portals will cause extra axle wrap and wheel hop. how much more? no clue... if your going portals its just aswell go linked isnt it?

the only thing i would add is why a D44? its weaker then stock toyota shit. and i would be it would be cheaper to just buy full portal axles and go from there.

There are not a lot of low rust Pinzgauer, Volvo C303 or unimog axles on craigs list. I assumed the extra mass of those very heavy axils would be overkill if not harmful to a taco.
My logic was Dana44s will always be available new or on craigslist and an existing product exists to convert those. It is easy to find parts. AND it is light enough to not to overwhelm a 3.7L taco (EDIT:i meant 3.7).

Paranoid56, what portal axles would you buy?

    (EDIT: low rust added)

    Ohh. Dana 60s.
Great build man. I will read it soon as i hope to learn from you. Your truck is bad ass and your welds are like stacked dimes.

But, Dana 60s are really heavy compared to 44s. My hypothetical discussion of portal gears is kinda to avoid bugegantic wheels, and overly high body yet still increase clearance.

i wouldnt bother with piz stuff, as its all IFS crap. get some volvo or uni stuff. a few weeks ago i saw a full volvo setup for 3k front/rear with lockers.

and yea dana 60s are more weight, they are also not going to brake where as D44s brake a lot lol
