Tacomas now scare the heck out of me!

The old ones were rock solid. Now they are all filled up with push button junk. They once had manual lock hubs up front which always worked. They once had mechanical linkages to shift the transfer case. No it's push button, which turns on systems to make it happen which pushes the same levers, rods etc. All stuff that can and will break costing way too much. What every happened to simple and reliable? I would search for an old one without the new junk. So many were made that they are out there. Just takes a bit of time to find one. The rest of the world can still get the land crusier 70 with a diesel six, steel wheels and manual free hubs but not in the USA. Real trucks are a thing of the past. Now 40,000 gets you a Tacoma leather love seat with automatic 4WD that't too nice to drive on a dirt road. I say don't buy.

 

FYI

I just bought a second Tacoma for my son. No problems with my first one. Zero issues. I am sure there are some with real problems but look at how many are sold vs problem trucks.

Well, I have a problem. I have put over 4,000KM on it in a month... I usually do about 1,500 a month. This thing is a blast to drive and i have so much to do that needs a truck, so... yeah, that.

 

I'm finding the same problem. I'm driving a ton now. I prefer driving the taco to our other car which is a new mercedes.

 

I actuqlly have a 2nd gen, but i will agree on this statement. I never knew just how much i needed a truck, until i bought a truck, lol

 

LOO, yep. Today I sized up a play structure a friend of mine is giving away and this family with a 4 year old wanted it but had no way to get it home, so I offered. I feel like Santa.

 

Speaking of smitty where has he been lately. I am wondering if he traded his truck off are got tired of gripping about it. Maybe it is fixed and he loves it now.

You don't know older Toyota trucks very well do you. I had plenty of issues with manual locking hubs, rust, steering racks and paint on my older trucks.

FYI my 91 cost almost 18k. If I were to equate the cost of my 3rd gen in 91 dollars it would cost about 23k but it's easily twice the truck in capabilities. Trucks built today easily surpass the trucks built back then.

My 04 was very similar to my 86 only it had air, cruise and four doors, almost no changes at all. The difference between my 16 and my 04 is amazing, completely evolutionary and in many ways an improvement over the older trucks.

This is the direction trucks are going now so get used to it.

I'm happy with all my previous trucks, warts and all. Have been extremely pleased with my 3rd gen so far, it's been the best yet.

 

Of coarse if your a full size man you'll probably prefer a midsized version of the Tacoma.

 

OP I was in the same boat as you with an 03 Dakota. Always wanted a Tacoma so bought the '16. I did have the transmission replaced after 500 miles. It has only been in for Oil changes and the Transmission TSB since.

My dealer has been great from a service standpoint. Read the reviews about others experience with dealerships in your area.

There is a lot of complaining on her but a lot of good info too. You have to do some sifting and searching to get what you need from this forum.

My truck isn't perfect but I love it and I'm not sorry I got rid of the Dakota.

 

Really? By your logic, your an idiot that owns a highly unreliable mechanical device when EVERYONE knows that there is no reason for you to have bought it when a horse is much more reliable instead of that piece of shit you own.

 

Hey guys. I'm new to the forum. What's the TSB issue that everyone is talking about?

 

It's stickied at the top of the 3rd gen forum. 2 are currently active, one to install plugs in the lower control arms so they no longer whistle at certain speeds and another to change some of the shifting characteristics of the auto transmission.

 

If I buy a 2017, have these issues been fixed?

 

TSBs apply to trucks that exhibit the associated symptoms so if your 2017 has whistling control arms you can have them install the plugs, if your transmission exhibits the same symptoms called out in the transmission TSB you could get an ECM reflash.

TSBs are not automatic like a recall, they are designed to be a diagnostic tool to aid in correcting a problem if it is apparent in a specific truck.

 

He's not an idiot he's just stuck in the 20th century and doesn't trust modern technology. What you said is funny but pretty harsh.
