So 2004 Tacomas are selling for 22K plus? Yeah okay pal. There are literally dozens of Tacos, that are 12 years old, on the web selling for 8-10K, that means the dealer is paying 6-8 for them.

It's a stretch. What kind of idiot would pay 18K for a 12 year old truck when there are the same trucks selling for 10K. The average price of a 12 year old taco is ~9-11K for 4X4 DC. For every listing you can find where some guy is TRYING to sell his truck for 18K, I can find SIX that are selling the same truck for 10K.

All it takes is one buyer looking for that truck and the money is made. Considering the average new car / truck purchase is over $33K, that buyer might think he's getting a good deal on a truck with another 10 years in it.

12 years on a Toyota with less than 120k miles would still have plenty of life left in it if it's well maintained. Plenty of 95s and up running around with twice the mileage.

Don't know if this has been covered or not but do you want a Mall crawler or a off road vehicle
When I see a Colorado owner I ask him if he wants to do some off roading. Would believe the offended looks.

I agree with you on the track record of the 1st and 2nd Gen Tacoma's. The new 3g has yet to show it is as reliable as the older Tacoma's. Just like I would not compare older S-10/Colorado to what Chevy is producing today. Time will tell on how well either vehicle holds up.

While the Tacoma is nice, I find it overpriced for what Toyota is offering.

I bought my 04 for 17,100 and sold it 12 years later for 12,900. Do the math, pal.

The S-10 was really a good little truck. The 1st Gen Colorado, not so much. The new one is very different.

Before I bought my 3rd gen, I was looking at '14 and '15 and they were same or more expensive than brand new 3rd gens.

You can buy a brand new Tacoma today for $23k but you find it incredulous that I could get a 2004 AC prerunner with 8k miles 12 years ago for $17? I'm done.

The new Colorado is the same size as the new Tacoma. Both are not so little anymore, but smaller than a full size. Hate to say it but I am leaning hard towards a Nissan Frontier Pro 4x. Some smoking deals showing up for the remaining 2016. Besides dealers discounting the 2016 there is an additional $1K from Nissan. Sorry to say I have not found any Toyota dealer that can match the prices Nissan is offering. That said, I am still checking forums for info, taking test drives (Tacoma and Frontier). I have ruled out the GM twins,

The 2017 Frontier is the same as the 2016. Looks like Nissan will not have a new Frontier out till 2018.

Honestly if your criteria is resale and reliability, I would get which ever one you like the looks/driving characteristics of better. Either of these trucks will last a long time if properly maintained and the resale value is not different enough to drive something you like less because it will make you a little bit more money in 5-10 years. Per the stats someone else posted earlier, the tacoma is projected at 72.9% @36 months and 61.7% @60 months vs. 70.7% @ 36 months and 59.5% @ 60 months for the canyon. Let's say a sale price of 40k for either truck....that's a difference of $880 after 3 or 5 years in resale. I'd pay $880 over that time to drive the truck I liked more.

Both are great trucks contrary to the diatribe you read here. To me, if you like the looks of the tacoma better and want a good off roading truck, get the toyota. If you like the looks of the canyon and value everything else over off road capability, get the GMC

While I agree if you are seriously into offroading and mod your truck, the tacoma is a better start, but I'd be interested in what trails 99.9% of stock tacoma owners would drive on that a stock gm twin couldn't handle as well (allowing removal of the air damn on either truck).

I cant attest to the twins (Canyon/Colorado) but there are folks that love them.

If your question is straight resale value, Tacoma wins hands down. I could look up the numbers, but its late, and I dont have to. I traded in my 2007 with 110k miles and got 15k guarantee over the phone. Tbh, I was on the fence with getting the 3rd gen, but that pushed me over.

If you take care of these trucks, they will pay you back in reliability and resale. Period.

Resale "value" though is more than just how the truck was taken care, how it looks, etc etc when trying to trade it in.

The Tacoma Brand is what people pay for. It may be BS to some, but the Tacoma name pulls alot of weight.

I have old 70 year olds come up to me and swear by Toyota trucks, lol. I would have half expected them to like Fords or Chevy's etc. Nope, Toyota is the brand.

Watch this, kinda janky video, but these guys review stock trucks and compare them. If I remember, the Honda like overheated or something lol
