Not sure if this belongs here or in the Suspension area. Mods feel free to move.

I lifted my truck about 8-9,000 miles ago. I now have 40,000 miles on it. All I did was put on the 5100's at 2.5". Stock coils. I just noticed today when sitting in a parking lot while I was turning my wheel that the CVs were popping. I am not hard on my suspension at all. Even while offroading I always take it slow. Could it be that the angle is bad enough with the 5100s set at 2.5" the CVs could already be popping.... not even 10,000 miles later? Has anybody else had this problem this recent after a lift? Now I'm stuck on what I should do. I'm thinking about just setting them back to stock height, or maybe a differential drop. I'm not very happy about this with it being the first time I've lifted a truck and all. Thanks for reading everyone.

I'm not too sure but I haven't heard many cases of this here on TW... That being said, a diff. drop could help, correct me if I'm wrong.

Are you in 2wd or 4wd when you hear the popping?

2wd. I haven't tried it in 4wd. I just don't understand why its popping....this early at least. I can understand maybe after 50,000 miles. But the angle at 2.5" isn't that bad. I'm 99% sure I installed everything correctly, but I will snap some pictures to post here tomorrow just so yall can see it anyways. Maybe you'll catch something. Think I'm gonna be sick lol. This couldn't have happened at a worse time in my life. I know its not a big deal RIGHT THIS SECOND since it just started, but its only gonna get worse.

edit- as for the diff. drop. I have heard more bad things than good things about them. I really don't want to lower my truck back down.

I have the same problem. Vibration at 60km/h very slight though. I have a 3" spacer with diff drop and carrier drop. I did all these things one at a time though. I think i may have worn grooves in my CV's. Im about to make some upper a arms with johhynjoints, but i dont think this will solve it.

Jones, how long after your lift did it start?

I did a quick check of the boots.... no visible grease. Will get a better look tomorrow.

I had no popping when i had that set-up and now I'm higher and still have no popping. Are you sure it coming from the cv?

I'm not 100% but its my first guess. I will get under it while someone turns the wheels tomorrow. What are some other areas I should look at other than the Cvs?

    ..

Check make sure the tire not hitting anything... Shouldn't be with your tire size. Check swaybar, hub nut, ball joints, etc. Give the front end a once over to check for something loose.

I have a full 3" spacer up front and I haven't had any CV issues yet, thats with a diff drop. Forget what size the diff spacer is. I think you're in a rare case, try taking it in, they may warranty ya, or just drop the bilsteins back down to stock height and take it in.

I doubt it's your CV's. (But I could be wrong) The CV's can handle way more lift than 2.5" The weak point normally is the boots. Unless your boots have blown and your CV's are dry?

There have been cases of the front bearings go bad. Do you go into mud and water often?

When does your truck make the popping sound? Going straight? Turning? Going over bumps, acceleration?? More info would help.

Best thing to do is get it up on a a rack and make sure everything is tight, and track down where the noise is coming from.

Could be tie rods, Sway bar, bearings, or CV's??? Can't tell by the info you gave. Could even be that you forgot to torque the bolts and they are coming loose??

Oh? If you do find that the CV's or the Bearings are bad? I'd say remove the lift and have Toyota fix it under warranty!;)

Thanks for the input guys...much appreciated!

Heres all the info I can give you as of right now.

I only hear the noise when sitting still and turning. The pop starts slightly before full lock when turning in either direction, but begins to pop louder right before full lock. I have only noticed it while in 2wd. I never go into the water, and never go in mud deeper that 5-6" (rough guess). I haven't noticed it while driving and making turns. While sitting still I can feel it a little bit in my steering wheel... but only if I'm paying attention to it and waiting on it to pop. As mentioned earlier, I checked the boots, which appeared fine. I didn't look to hard since I was checking them in a rather congested area. I will check them in the driveway tomorrow as well. Pictures will be coming to just for the heck of it.... may be pointless but yall might catch something I missed.

Thanks again for the help. This site is way more helpful than any other forum I have ever been on... whether its for a guitar, cell phone, truck, or a dominos pizza vs. papa johns pizza discussion forum.

I would love to get it fixed under warrenty, unfortunately I hit 36,000 not long ago.

I feel confident that I properly torqued the bolts when I re-assembled everything, but I will double check them all again tomorrow.

    3" Lift
The popping has always happened its usually when im parking in reverse, my trucks so dang long its the only way ! But hte vibration started immediatley after lift. Its gotten less and less noticable as i put it in the hanger bearing shim, then diff shim. It dissapears when i put it in 4x4. I've got only 70k on my truck, ive went thru a set of universals already. I dont go hard on trails often. I drove without an allignment after the lift for a bit as well. not long. So i think i can relate this to my cv's or universal joints maybe

    A few bolts are different.
I've been dealing with this same issue for over a year. I have been trying to track things down and stall on repairs till tax return time. So far I really want to say it is coming from a bearing, either the front wheel bearings or worse yet, the differential bearing (driver side for me) where the CV goes into the housing. There are a couple reasons why I believe it to be a bearing. When I let the truck sit for a couple days as I'm driving my other truck it seams to be the worst (pop and "roar" of bearings??) right as i back out of the drive way and head down the road. I mentioned the "roar", it as if you were to put ice spikes on a quarter of your tire and head down the road. you can hear/feel a difference in the sound of the circular motion of the tires spinning, like the bearings are stacking up on themselves in a motion like an ocean wave. The loudest "pop occurs when the steering wheel is turned to the right and I'm backing out. Then, in drive, pulling out onto the road, going forward, the "roaring happens for a couple miles until things warm up.

Hopefully I'll get going on the new wheel bearings soon, starting there and using the old check list and check book to deductively solve the issue at some point.

I would be money that its the ball joint on your control arms. I had the same issue until I went up to the LR UCA's.
