    Question...
I'm about to install a shed, I'm trying to decide between wood base or concrete base. What are your thoughts? I'm in California so rain/snow is not an issue.

Unfortunately not my department. I just hold up color chips (or sweaty t-shirts) and nod a lot.

Managed 26 years with my wife that way.

how about termites? I think you would like concrete but its a lot more difficult to move if you decide to at a later date.

If it's just a garden type shed and a dry climate- I'd opt for wood primarily based on cost.

I doubt I'd want to move it later on. I guess pressure treated wood would be an option.

My garage is getting cluttered and I have plenty of space in the back and the sides or my property. I thinking 10x8 at this point.

    1. California is a big state. Your statement made me laugh. I'm in snow and rain areas. And still in CA...

    2. Size matters. Our limit here is 10x12 before needing a permit. Anything larger needs a permit.

    3. We just did ours last week. Bought and had installed a TuffShed. As much as we love building things (husband is a civil engineer and construction mgr) our time doing other things has become more valuable.

    4. Things we considered with TS because there are 3 levels of quality: while we LOVED their top of the line, we know this home will not be our forever home, we did not go overboard there. We did get the mid grade because it still met basic construction standards (double top plates, 16" center studs...)

I think this also applies to building your own. What will it be used for? How long do you intend to use it? Will its cost add equivalent value to the property?

Are you pulling a permit for the shed? Not sure how the zoning laws work in your area, but a wood base may not constitute a permanent fixture and wouldn't need all the permitting while a concrete base could be considered a true foundation.

I poured a slab for my parents shed, and the built for them structure sits on pier blocks.

I'm in California, rain is an issue.. exterior siding is rotting despite the above.

    I have another option....
10x12 is also the size limit in Sacrmanto County before requiring a permit.

At my old place, I had a Tuff Shed built onsite. I prepared a foundation consisting of a 4x4 pressure treated timber frame pinned to the soil with 18-inch rebar stakes, lined that with landscape cloth, then filled that with 3/4-inch aggregate in a couple lifts and tamped and leveled. This foundation extended about 12 inches beyond the outer walls of the shed, so it helps diffuse rain splash, kept it clean, and kept the bottom of the shed high and dry. The Tuff Shed has galvanized metal sleepers that rested on the aggregate. But on this surface, you could also just use more pressure-treated timber if you are DIYing it.
