Shopping Toyota can be tricky to get a good deal. We contacted 25+ dealerships via email with a list of what we wanted and asked what they would sell it for (out the door, not including Tax, Title, and Loan). We weren't too picky about color (no black, white or blue) or bed, but it had to be Auto, DC, 4x4, SR5, Tow and no other option package. If one gave us a better deal, we'd go to the next and ask if they could beat it..... All online only!!!! We had our CU lined up before we shopped. Once we had a dealer come back with what we liked, we paid them to hold it and picked it up that weekend. We spent less than 20 minutes at the dealer. We paid $29,900 and drove 165 miles one way to get the truck.

Actually, I should credit my wife.... she did most of the work here.

To the OP; I'm in the same exact boat as you. I've had my Gen 1 for 17 tears, 192k miles and it has been stellar, but time to upgrade. I really wanted a Colorado Diesel (I tow a good bit), even test drove it twice. The motor was great and the truck drove really nicely, but when I started researching it was difficult to find reliability info on the diesel (it's new) but the Chevy and GMC brands in general seem to be behind Toyota in reliability and that really turned me off.

At the end of the day, my wife found a house she liked better than she liked the idea of me having a new truck, so I'm likely going to have my gen 1 a few more years, but I'm leaning much more towards another Toyota simply due to the reliability history of the brands. I sure hope that either Toyota comes out with a diesel, or the American manufacturers get their act together in the reliability department, because there was a lot to like about the Colorado diesel.

I had the same thought while pricing trucks. $40k for a small truck, what!? So I jumped on google and used the inflation calculator to figure out what I paid in today's dollars for my Tacoma back in 1999. My truck is a SR5 v6 4x4 TRD 5-speed extended cab. In 1999 I paid $29k. According to the inflation calculator, that is the same as spending $42k in 2016, ouch! So I guess the numbers are higher, but the value that you're spending hasn't really changed much.

Did you own a prerunner reg cab cause that is the only setup that you can get that is ~17K? The bluebooks on that basic setup is 6-8K, yet you are telling me you sold it for 12K. Either 1) You are wrong on what you paid or 2) You are wrong on what you sold it for. Either way something is wrong here.

True, something is clearly wrong here. First, you used KBB which, In my experience woefully undervalues private owner used vehicles. Use NADA. Next you used 136k miles for some goofy reason when my posts clearly said the truck had ~90k. Third, you are looking at trade in, not private party sales value. I could go on but you are obviously not capable of being persuaded by facts, reason or logic. But it's been entertaining.

My .02... Its all about supply and demand.

Ive been shopping for a used Tacoma 4x4 for almost a year here in the SF Bay Area - finally found my 2011 SR5 DCLB 4x4 and love it. Its unreal how FAST they go when they do come up on craigslist or other. If its a 4x4 Tacoma - Gen 1 or 2 - and its clean..it sells fast as lightning. Demand is high and supply is low. Why? People buy them and drive them forever. Supply is scarce... If its clean, a Toyota truck,... Gen 1, 2, 3...or pre-Tacoma...its golden.

PS: I also LOVE the look of the new Canyon..and that diesel motor. Just too pricey for me.

These numbers sound crazy, but that is the market on these trucks. I work for a leasing company, and the main reason I bought a Tacoma is, I see what we give for them on trade in where I work. I almost always buy used, but it makes no sense to buy a used Tacoma. There is no way I would pay $25K for a 3-4 year old off road double cab 4x4 with almost 100K miles on it, but people are doing it. On the older trucks, inflation has a lot to do with the high prices compared to what they paid. How much was a double cab 4x4 10 years ago? We have a 2013 double cab TRD Sport 4wd in stock, with 40K miles, that we own for $27,800, which means we will sell it for somewhere around $30K. A BRAND NEW double cab 4wd TRD Sport has an MSRP of $36,295 with tow package without any accessories. With a discount, the new truck can easily be purchased fro $35K. So that's about a $5000 difference between two trucks FOUR years, and 40K miles apart. The used truck is selling for 85% of the price of the new truck. That's the real world. Are people stupid to pay $15K for a 10 year old Tacoma with 100K miles, I think so, but they are doing it every day. Not everyone can afford a $500 truck payment. Opinions are great, but this is the real world.

The first 3-4 years are the biggest years for a vehicle to depreciate, and the example below, that's only been 15%. This truck is at the point where the depreciation starts to level off and not drop as much each year. I can only imagine what it will sell for in 6 more years. Probably close to $20K.

It's pretty simple really. If you have a $15k limit available to spend on a vehicle, you look at what is available for $15k. Not everyone has the means to buy a new vehicle or thinks its the smartest financial decision. Do I buy the 2006-2007 Tacoma or the 2010-2011 F150 or Silverado? I won't call anyone stupid or retarded for deciding how they want to spend their own hard earned money, even if I might not make the same decision. The person that bought my 2004 got a really nice vehicle that should easily go another 100k miles+ with few problems. I know it was hard for me to sell it. I also know after 2 days on Auto Trader there were 2 other "stupid" or "retarded" buyers behind him with cash in hand hoping he would not show up.

My intention wasn't to call people stupid. You can pick apart my wording, but THE POINT was that these Tacoma's are holding their value like crazy. The people posting how much they got for their trucks are being truthful, because I see it every day. Your comment was "Good for you. Get ready to be called a liar though" to these people.

If my budget was to the point I couldn't buy a new Tacoma, I'd buy a used frontier, or half ton, and get a truck with much lower miles on it that a Tacoma, for a similar price. I think most people would agree if all you can afford is $15K, you probably don't have ton's of cash sitting in the bank to spend repairing a high mileage old truck. A smarter decision might be to get a lower mileage truck for similar dollars as a Tacoma. I see people make bad decision on vehicles every day, because they wanted a specific make or model, over common sense. Mostly people buying used BMW's and Mercedes because they wanted a brand, but couldn't' afford to repair them. Sometimes that's a guy buying a 150K mile Tacoma over a 70K mile Frontier, because the Tacoma's look better.

...^^^... I tried a Ridgeline and loved it ... just wanted to go back to a Tacoma for a smaller size in parking areas.

I like the "truck ride"of the Tacoma and the Canyon ride is too soft for me.
