I have a 2016 Toyota Tacoma 4WD V6 automatic 4 door long bed with 16,000 miles on it that recently went into "safe mode" and was towed to a Toyota dealer for repair under warranty. First I was told the computer said code identified a faulty crankshaft sensor. Next I was told the fuel pump exerted pressure on the cam cover and pushed the cover into the cam "gear". I was told the cam "gears", cam cover and cam sensor would be replaced. Next I was told the computer required replacement. When the repair was complete and I return to pick up my truck the I was told they had to drop the oil pan and clean out metal particles, changed the oil and filter twice and cleaned metal particles out of the VVT actuator. Also there is light scoring on the camshaft caps and journals. The work order receipt I received confirms this. I was told this is the result of improper installation of the camshafts, caps and/or improper torque issues at the factory. Toyota offered an extended warranty of 10 years 100,000 miles but I was unsatisfied with this wanting a lifetime warranty. They said the warranty offer was to be accepted at time of receipt of the truck or rejected. I rejected it. How do I go about pursuing Toyota for a lifetime warranty? Whom do I contact? And barring that, a new engine? This dealer called in a Toyota specialist that had to fly in from somewhere. They told me this was an unknown problem in this line of engines. Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
You'd have to bring that up with corporate.

Good luck on the whole lifetime warranty thing. If there was a serious issue, I would think it would show up before 100K. Also, why do you think they need to warranty it forever? Nothing lasts forever, even when it's installed correctly. They only "owe you" a repair, not a lifetime warranty. These are made in Texas and Mexico, not heaven, so they won't be perfect. Unfortunately, you got a bad one.I think you possibly made a mistake not taking a free warranty.

That sucks. I really hope nobody else has to go through that and I agree with you. I would expect better than a 100,000 mile warranty but a lifetime is probably highly unlikely. There is no doubt that the service life of the engine has been reduced. They should probably replace the short block at an absolute minimum. These types of stories are very disconcerting and makes me really doubt Sweers constant yammering about QDR.

Lifetime warranty isn't a reasonable request... but I would push for a replacment long block with such significant and documented damage to critical components. Not like they pulled rod bearing caps to inspect the crankshaft, but I would expect scoring there as well with all those metallic particles floating around.

I would have taken the 10 year, 100k miles, then drove it hard. force any issues to show up. Do you plan to keep it beyond 10 years, or 100k?

Seriously... why would you reject a 10 year, 100k warranty?

Now you have to blow it up again quickly before the factory warranty ends to get a new motor. You had 100k miles to get it done with just one word.

Thanks for the input guys. I considered the 100k warranty but thought that was an insulting number, akin to hush money. I emailed corporate today and requested a 500k warranty that covers routine maintenance, tires, brakes, and fluids, and sternly demanded they pay off my mortgage. I reminded them I'm a paying customer and am on the fence about ever being a Toyota buyer ever again, and failing to meet my requests would result in loss of my future sales and are a far greater monetary blow to them than my terms.

I hope they stand behind their product and don't try to fuck me over on this, I love my truck.

Would anyone accept just a 100K warranty on an engine that could go 200K easily, with obvious damage at only 16K?

I would want a new engine, not just a 100K warranty.

Well Toyota is leaving you kind of screwed. Actually they are doing more than they are required to, but you ended up in an unfortunate position. I'd call back and request the highest platinum warrant they offer complimentary. I believe it is 8 years, 125k miles?

Then if you truly aren't comfortable with keeping the truck I'd use it as leverage to sell it since the warranty is transferable one time. Somebody will be ok with it.

By the way, if there truly is a major issue like that, it will show up earlier than the warranty running out.

I'm confused. You are having the same issue with yours?

Op, sorry to hear about your truck. I agree with you wanting more than just a 100k warranty.
