Damn. Sorry to hear that. At $40k+ in 2017 a truck should be damn near perfect and give you a foot massage.

Sorry you seem a little sensitive on the matter.

I'm illustrating, very simply, that my Tacoma does not come anywhere near the stated highway mpg estimates relative to the conditions I use it. It falls way short to be precise.

I find it ironic that it can't muster par with a truck weighing twice as much, with worse aerodynamics. You can argue about the 'rolling mass', 'physics' until the cows come home. At the end of the day my Tacoma is still under performing mpg 'estimates' by an unreal margin. PERIOD.

Conversely- Diesel canyon owners are reporting very reasonable mpg data.

My results should serve as only another 'data point' for someone investigating the reasonableness of Toyota's claims.

I think we all get your Tacoma isn't getting the mileage you thought it would.

You would think. Unfortunately they are all mechanical, and price has little to do with quality. Some of the worst cars on the road are BMW's, Mercedes, Jaguar's, and Land Rovers. Some of the best are Civic's and Corolla's. When I hear he phrase "German engineering" I laugh out loud.

The mpg seems to have stayed the same for the last 20 years, no matter what the gen. I want to work with the R and D guys in the fuel economy dept. Feet up, eyes closed, nap time.

This is my biggest problem with the truck: inconsistent MPG's. I could deal with getting 17mpg, or 19mpg, or hell I'd love to be getting 20+. I do the same drive pretty much every day, 90% highway with some town driving, and have now put almost 19k miles on my truck. I have seen 20.5mpg for over around a month straight, and currently its averaging 16.5mpg. This change happened almost immediately following my 10K service. This constant fluctuation of mpg from month to month drives me a little bonkers, so I try not to think about it. The motor is trying to be too smart for its own good.

If the stated EPA estimates are that far off, would that open Toyota to a class action?

With all the lawsuits that manufacturers were subject to a couple years back, and now the VW deal, I would be surprised if they are intentionally off. The EPA ratings are based on driving 60 miles an hour in no wind, on a flat surface, with no traffic speeding you up and down. We'd all be getting 20 plus if we drove like that. We're too impatient, and with the highways clogged like they are, no one drives like the vehicles are tested. My personal opinion is that these trucks have horrible aerodynamics, and have a huge drop off over 60 mph. My truck shifts in and out of overdrive when I drive it at 70-80 miles per hour. It stops when I drop down to 65. The bigger half ton trucks don't drop off as much over 60, because their engines aren't trying as hard at 75 as the Tacoma. The RAM has an 8 speed transmission that keeps it in a lower RPM at 75, than my Tacoma. It really sucks they get such crap mileage at 75, but it's called the way it is. No one, outside of my grandpa, is getting the EPA rated mileage on their vehicle. I had a Chevy Cruze diesel that got great mileage, but no where close to what the EPA said it should.

The 2013 Tacoma I had with the previous V6 and automatic didn't do that. It's a shame the new generation is causing this controversy and dissatisfaction.

I came from an gen 2 Tacoma TRD OR SWB 4x4 and according to fuelly was at 14.8mpgs with armor, lift, 265's. My new 2017 TRD OR LB is currently at 16.5 mpgs, but I believe it will get better since the tolerances in the motor are brand new. I will be happy with 17-18 mpgs combined. Its a truck not a Honda Ridgeline, lol.

between 70-80 on hwy. I used cc when level but turned it off when in mountains. 3K on truck so still learning how to drive best with this trans and engine. If climbing a grade and feel it dogging, I will pop it to sport (ie 4th) rather than slam the throttle to get it to downshift and then I can control shifting a little easier. I did find it had more trouble holding 4th with gear and 3 guys in truck on the high passes and would downshift to 3rd. My 2011 would pull most passes holding 4th as long as I hit them with plenty of speed. Another thing i noticed on the big down hills, I had to brake more compared to my 2011. This thing is geared so low that it will get up to 90 if you let it. My 2011 didn't do that.
