Good points here. My thought was that the manual would be better for this very reason. You can shift when you want and keep it in the best RPM range depending on what you're looking for. Want to get the most power out of the engine? Rev it out and shift at 3500+. Cruising and want better MPG, shift early. Don't have the luxury in the auto. I would guess that's where many of the complaints about the 3.5 auto come from.

That, and apparently the tuning on the transmission was woefully inadequate for actual real world driving, while providing better MPGs in testing/theory. In the real world, sometimes you have to floor it to safely merge onto a highway or onto a busy street and MPGs become a very distant concern when compared to avoiding being rear ended lol

so, has anyone around here suggested going numerically higher than 4.3 in the rear for the MT's as a realistic option? i wonder how 4.56's may feel and work in terms of normal on-road driving and mpg. i haven't received my truck yet, so i'm still not getting the picture of how the low end revs feel in this truck.

Yep, pretty sluggish, merging with traffic can be interesting. Upside, yesterday coming back to town, I got 28.4 mpg on a 70 mile drive, some hills, no load. 65 mph for about 40 miles, then 56 mph for 30 miles. Wish the whole tank got that much, but gets down to around 22 mpg.

Some people need to learn how to downshift. I don't find a problem with the power band. Want to get out to pass or merge on freeway? Then downshift to a gear that is 3300 RPM or better. No different than I had to do with my last manual truck. Just had to re-learn the gearing/rpm on my tacoma 6 speed vs the 5 speed/rpm in my other truck. If You don't learn to drive a manual the way it was mean't to be driven, you may as well have bought your Tacoma with and Auto slushbox.

This. power is just up higher in the rpms. when you need power just downshift. I do alot of passing on two lane highways at 70 mph. rev match and downshift to third and hold the fuck on.

You need to change the units to US mpg instead of imperial. That 28 becomes 23 and that 22 becomes 18 which is exactly on par with what everyone else is getting.

Mine has it. It holds the truck there for a couple seconds when letting off the brake. After that couple seconds though you will start to roll. I'd rather not have the hill start. I don't mind rolling back and freaking out the person behind me lol

    I don't have trouble merging with a 2.7L stick, how can a 3.5L be a problem?

    Mostly stuff I built.
Toyota went back to the cast steel bolt on front bearing retainer with the RC62F to eliminate the throw out bearing issues that the RA60 had with one piece aluminum front housing.

Thank you, good to know. If I do decide to move to a 3rd gen it will be a manual, but I was concerned about the TOB.
