Double Cab Long Bed

I have an 01 access cab tacoma and love it. I am interested in buying a 2010 Tacoma Double Cab with the long bed and the TRD sport package. How does the longer wheel base affect the off roading ability. Does this option still have what it takes for some moderate off roading? I am not going to be rock crawling but you never really know what you are going to find. Those who have the double cab long bed, is there any other downsides to having the longer truck? Thanks

 

I have been wheeling my stock DC LB for quite a while now and besides being easier to high center, I haven't noticed any other problems, it still has the same vertical clearance. Approach angles might be slightly worse but I dont know.

 

Getting around a tight trail is a bit harder of course. When I'm following FJ Cruisers in my DC shortbed, I'm always the guy doing 3-point turns. A longbed is going to increase that situation.

 

Not sure about the 2010 but my 2009 does not have the rear diff lockers like the short beds do. If that makes a difference to you then it is something to think about. I dont do any rock crawling and have not had an issue getting in and out of some muddy situations but I did get stuck at the dunes in pismo with the stock tires pretty quickly.

 

The locker would be an option with the TRD Offroad package. The longbed DC is a very rare package, and I'm not sure if you can get it in TRD OR. It wasn't available around here.

 

TRD Sport for show and TRD Off Road for go. The long bed will definitely decrease your break over angle. I'm not sure, but it probably decreases your departure angle too. Turning radius will increase with the long bed. Approach angles and true ground clearance should be the same.

 

The DB Cab long bed is alot more truck to handle on a trail. Its alot longer and take more manuvering to get into tight spaces. Other than the turning and getting high centered I doubt that there is much of a difference. I know in my area you cannot get a DB Cab Long bed with the TRD Off Road, it was only avail. with the TRD Sport Package.

I would have been toast. So to me i see DCLB as an advantage. I do wish I had a locker though, but not to concerned about any longer with the other truck getting built

 

Hey DK - Where did you get that camper shell thingie??? Is it removable?? I need one for hunting and camping trips but I dont want to leave it on all the time.
