How long did your starter last??

In my 1st truck a 1999 taco I had to replace the starter at 50K. How about you? Just wondering what the norm is.

 

I don't think they wear out very often, I do recall seeing some rebuild kits that had new brushes in it though.

 

Depends on a bit of luck of the draw, and how they are treated.

Suspect ones regularly submerged and covered in salt slush to have a higher fail rate.

I'd have to think hard for my last starter failure on any marquee. Probably back in the 70's on a 60's vehicle.......

I've never had a failure on a Japanese vehicle. But I've usually sold them to family or friends around 150k or so.

 

+1 on the "never failure on Japanese vehicle" Original going strong at 123K miles so far. Which means today it will go out.

 

Starter failed in my '05 last year. Around....oh...78K, maybe. Thought it might be the battery first, but no. So now I have a new battery and a new starter.

Once under there, I alarmingly found that one of the mounting bolts had backed itself out quite a bit, which maybe contributed to the failure...? I have no idea.

 

I have never had a starter fail on a vehicle. on a Ford Escorts I had it wouldn't work once, so we tapped on it with a hammer. never a issue again.

 

The question should be, what are you doing thats killing your starter?

 

Oh yes, the hammer. LOL. When it failed to start when I was at work the first time, I had completely forgotten about the hammer trick. So while I waited for a starter I had on order to come in (local prices were stupidly expensive), the hammer is what was used to help persuade the failing one to keep going a little longer.

 

I think the only starter failure I've ever had was on my old VW Golf, it was right around 10 years and just under 200k miles.

 

The starter on my 85 truck was the ONLY failure that I had with the truck. Went out at about 90k.

 

Exactly what happends mounting bolts backed out and probably messed your starter up, I had a original last me 300k my first gen is at 150k with original hoping to last till 300k

 

Mine started going out at 175k

All of my Honda's and Toyota's(except one) have gone 175K - 185K before the contact sets needed replacing. When that happened, I pulled the starter and took to a local electrical rebuilder. My '06 Avalon has 212K on it and is still running the original starter.

No road salts, harsh winter or humid salt water air in my neck of the woods.

 

Thanks for your input. I probably just had bad luck with my first truck. Right now I only have 33K on my 2014 reg cab.

 

Yep. I ad to replace a water pump on a 2004 Tacoma 4 banger after just 65K miles. Things happen.

 

The only issues I ever had on my old 2000 was the Power Steering Pump and my Windshield Washer Reservoir sprung a leak.

 

I had to replace my starter in my 98 when it had about 75k miles. It was about 12 yrs old at the time.
