Sumo Springs for lifted applications

So a little while ago I installed a multi-leaf add a leaf from Wheelers Off-Road that gave the rear the advertised 1.5" of lift. These were designed to replace the stock overload leaf from the pack. I wasn't really comfortable running without overloads as I do load my truck from time to time and didn't want to go for a full replacement leaf pack yet. After doing some research and seeing other members using the Sumo Springs, I've decided to give them a try and ordered a set. The Sumo Springs measures 6 inches in height and that's for a stock truck. I then contacted the good people from Sumo Springs and inquired about other options such as taller bump stops or taller brackets and they were nice enough to work with me and will be sending me custom brackets that will be higher to compensate for the lift. I should have the extra hardware soon and will take additional photos as well as a full review when installed and tested.

SSR-610-40 with the regular brackets. The bump stops easily screws on and off. A supplied blue loctite is included with the kit. For those interested, they will be manufacturing the taller brackets for lifted applications and will be available soon. Stay tuned for more info.




So I received the spacers and even though the wrong brackets where sent, I can show that spacer will extend to a total height of 7 inches with the big wheel spacer and an additional 1/2 inch with the solid spacer added. Not sure about how I feel stacking spacers though.








So I just received a package from UPS at 9:03PM! Thank you UPS, according to tracking, this was on their truck at 5:33AM this morning "out for delivery". Good thing these are made out of steel.



Basically the new brackets did not have the pre-installed stud but a bolt hole. New brackets came with new grade 8 bolts. Not sure yet if I will install with both the 1" and 1/2" spacers stacked giving the additional 1.5" in extra height. I don't think I will have time to install this weekend as I would have to install my AP UCA's and OME coils along with the Sumosprings. Stay tuned....





Update:
So after reviewing this again, the spacer idea might not work as the brackets now uses a bolt that comes in from underneath and will most likely be a clearance issue with the leaf pack tie-bolt. I'll inform the engineer at Sumo Springs and see what they come up with.



Update: 3/8/17

So after some more time and mileage with the Sumo Springs set up with the 1.5" spacers, here's an updated review on them.

Below is what the Sumo's look like with the truck's weight on it. The truck has a Wheeler's 1.5" progressive AAL. The sumo springs itself is about 5" tall and with the truck's weight on it, it is compressed to about 4". I believe with a stock truck, the compression is similar thus giving a slight lift of about 3/4". Since I have the spacers on, this also provided the same lift.


With the Wheelers's progressive AAL, there's about a 6 inch space between the frame and the leaf pack under the truck's own weight. Sumo springs without the spacers measures about 6 inches including brackets. From my experience, I found that when the Sumo springs are compressed from their normal height of 5 inches to 4 inches, they tend to be on the stiffer side. It's like riding on a single AAL but less of a upward flex as the Sumo springs begin to act like bump stop (that compresses instead of a solid rubber one).


With the Sumo springs at a constant compressed state, highway ride is stiff. You can feel the back end with every dip, rise, and pot holes on the road. Off-road is similar. You would not want to ride with the Sumo's on washboard like roads on or off.

Below photos are with the Wheeler's 1.5 inch progressive AAL installed with Sumo springs without the spacers. As you can see, the Sumo springs are just barely fit between the leaf pack and the frame. I have not had this set up off-road or loaded yet but I can say that this provides a more compliant ride. The ride is smooth on the highway. I'll update this again once I had more time with this set up.

 

Those are cool, but damn are they expensive.

I paid just a little over $200 for them shipped. I think that's reasonable. I guess I will have to wait and see how they perform.

nice!! I'm interested in this. Although I kept the overload on my HS progressive AAL, I'll be adding a camper and will occasionally load up the rear. please keep us updated.

 

Will the taller bracket be designed with the 1.5" AAL in mind? That would be awesome.

If SuperSprings built a Sumo Spring that had a longer stud and could take spacers like the super bumps they'd be selling a lot. $210ish for what these offer seems cheap.

 

I would probably buy it. The truck needs the help whenever I move or throw some bags of mulch in the bag. I don't want to go full air bags, and this is the simple solution that would work well for me. Unloaded with the non TSB OEM springs and just a Toytec AAL, I'm looking at 7.5"s between top of springs and the pad on the frame where the bumpstops hit.

 

I run the sumo's and don't know how you can run without some kind of help.

 

How often do you pull a trailer?
Do you off road the truck?
Have oba?

 

The longer bolt stud is what their engineer and I talked about. We didn't talk about exact measurements but he did say they are making the studs longer so it can accommodate for spacers so I am assuming it can be adjustable to your lift height due to spacer height. I was hoping to have this installed by this weekend but just got an e-mail from them today saying that they accidentally sent me the wrong brackets. We also talked about doing bump stops in the front as well. I'll keep you guys updated.

For what it's worth I think they'd be hard pressed to beat Super Bumps for the front. Even on a stock truck they made a remarkable difference in the impact handling.

 

These aren't bump stops per se, they act as them but the main purpose is as an overload spring to reduce sag in the back when heavily loaded or pulling a trailer. as far as I know they don't even make them for the front

 

I believe the spacers will come with the custom brackets (longer studs). Think of it sort of like top plate spacers for the front but in this case, it moves the sumo springs bump stops up so it can sit closer to the frame perch.

I know Super Bumps makes the hollow bump stops for the front so when bottoming out, it's not jarring like the stock ones being made of solid rubber. The idea would be to make some for the fronts with the sumo spring's material to a certain density to control compression and rebound.

 

I pull the bike trailer a few times a year and my 6x10 utility trailer a half dozen times a year. No off roading other than a dirt/gravel road at camp. OBA ??

 

Air bags require you to add or leval then as you wish. If you would off road where it needs to flex the bags need another adapter.
The sumo springs are nice for a set and forget, but they will lift the rear end. And touching the frame will make the rear feel bumps more but less body roll
On Board Air would make air bags easier to operate.

 

@bgdv1 oh and if you keep weight in the beed like a cap or ~200 lbs it will ride great. I load 1-2 300 lb bikes in bed and it's amazing, smooth even in switch backs of mtns, while keeping a good ride height

If you do decide air bags one of the Colorado guys took a vacuumed pump to the air bags to keep them from going all over the place with the daystar cradles

 

I've got these with my 1.5" AAL and didn't see a need to increase the height. I've got about .5" of clearance and when I add a load contact will be made and they will compress as needed.

 

Ah. So aal lifts it enough, I forgot to measure but when I got new tsb leaf pack they put the sumo on also and I could tell it was lifted a bit more than normal
