Fluid film

You can wash FF off if you try to however if you use a fan spray it won't take it off. Driving on wet roads or through water won't take it off. Maine uses a sand (more like gravel) and salt mix, in NH 6 miles away they use salt to clear the roads enough for all NH cars to be white in the winter. I just pressure washed the dirt off the truck getting ready to reapply FF the water beaded up like the frame was waxed it was still oily and covered. The small rust spot were there when I bought the truck in 2011. I don't guess any protection is 100% but FF is as close as it comes in my experience. I had a 80 SR5 under coated by a well known brand there was not a place on that truck that did not rust including where they put plugs in the door frames.

 

I emailed Fluid Film's customer service last month, and was told that Fluid Film should provide protection against road salt for the entire winter season. I was also advised against using the either an undercarriage spray at an automatic car wash or a pressure washer at a manual car wash.

Our roads are heavily salted, and I'm not sure how I feel about not washing the undercarriage on a regular basis.

I gave the frame a good coating anyway, and used almost 6 cans. Not sure what I did differently than everyone else, but it sure didn't seem like I was over-applying it.

 

My frame still has an oily residue everywhere I applied Fluid Film last November.

I did was my truck off in the winter and did a more throrough cleaning on the spring. When most vehicle frames around me were white, mine was still black.

I will be washing and reapplying a new cost this year. On the frame I only used the spray cans inside the box where the early 2G trucks are starting to let go. Everything else on the frame I literally used a gallon of the material and a paintbrush/my hands. It was smelly and messy but I had a gross looking/smelling heavy coat that stood up quite well.

I plan on doing the same come mid-November when I have some free time. I think this time I will use gloves though.

 

If Fluid Film is the barrier, there would be no need to wash off the underside the entire winter, no? Except for maybe habit or anal retentiveness, I'm going to resist the urge to spray off my undercarriage until spring. That won't stop me from maybe getting a wash or two of the body in during a January thaw.

 

Mine is all coated by spray can. I did notice it has come off in some areas that get high speed water during driving like wheel wells/bottom of the diff. But everywhere else is wet as can be!

I too feel the need to constantly wash my frame during winter and I am going to have to refrain and put the stuff to the test. I will be doing winter check ups and re applying in any spots missing fluid film though!

I forgot to mention, the spray guns have to be hooked up to an air compressor, so if you don't have one, this is something to consider.

 

what all did you get and how much $?

 

The undercoating kit #1, comes with the spray gun, two fill bottles, one gallon FF, one large spray can of FF, flexible 360 degreee wand for the can, brush applicator (don't need), (10) 1/2" undercoating body plugs (don't need). That's $99.50. I got the 32" flexible wand, the 10" solid wand and a can of FF grease additionally. I got it all for $124.65

I forgot how much the pro gun was vs. the base gun, maybe $25? Free UPS ship and another $14 saved by using the coupon.

 

I saw cans at autozone for $9.99 each so about the same as Amazon if you have an autozone nearby.

 

Do an ebay search for this and buy a case of 12 for under $80. shipped. My case sits in my garage just waiting for me. Best price I found for it.

 

One gallon will do your truck at least 3 times last gallon I bought was $32 some thing at a tractor dealer.

 

Old post but, will fluid film help from excessive mud build up? And what I mean is.. once applied before an off road trip, and mud has accumulate in the undercarriage area, will it make it easier to take off mud with a pressure washer than it is when no fluid flim has applied? Hope this make sense. I don't plan on leaving the fluid film for long, just as an agent to help me clean the dirt and mud or salt better off with a pressure washer

 

Will work but expensive just to do that, what about Pam spray

 

Well I know things like Pam would work to, but I wanted an all around protection when it comes to the elements

 

Just a comment to the people pressure washing the undercarriage of their trucks, I wouldn't recommend this throughout the winter as the salt isn't hurting anything as the fluid film is providing a barrier. Repeated pressure washing will rinse off the fluid film and force the salt/water into the frame and rust it quicker.

 

I agree with u, luckily with me I live here in Hollister CA which is just dry..but about to head for a 3day weekend to Tahoe and I'm really iffy with rust and dirt/snow/mud build up on my undercarriage. So I plan to use FF during the trip then once I'm back home, I plan to wash it ALL OFF with my pressure washer. What do u think?

 

That would be fine, I was referring to people who live where you get winter conditions for several months and they constantly wash their undercarriage.

 

I've done my 2015 taco twice now with fluid film and my frame still looks brand new, I'm sold on this stuff and btw one spray can will barely do it but should be enough, this last time I used two cans and it was overkill.

 

Has any one ever used mavcoat steel shield? It's pricey but I wanted to see if any one had a real experience with it
