I just changed my oil myself for the first time in my 2015 2.7l. Before now, I was using Toyotacare. The crush washer seems to be fused to the bottom of the oil pan. I left it there this time, but anything I need to know to remove it next time? I didn't really want to start cutting and gouging at it.

Whenever one sticks to my oil pan, I just pop it with the edge of the wrench I use to loosen the plug. I buy a new one from NAPA for each oil change.

It will pop right off. Just take a screwdriver or simular and tap it sideways. They stick all the time

Thanks. I figured I needed to stop babying it, but didn't want to mess it up.

It's flat. There is no ridge. Just don't gouge it and ruin the flat mating surface.

They make a nylon/plastic washer you can replace the copper one with so you don't have to replace or worry of a leak. I think napa has them.

If you have a copper washer there is no need to ever replace it. The wifes van had a copper washer and I used it for 20 years and never replaced it and that was using 4000 mile change intervals.

Clean and reuse, never a drip.

I bet Toyotacare has left the same washer on this whole time.

I buy new ones from the dealer when I go in and buy the filters (usually about 6 at a time). Toyota filters are far superior to Fram and all that other shit.

I've always changed my own oil and I've always left it on there cause it was stuck the first time. I figured why risk scratching the oil pan trying to yank it off. I eventually got a fumotovalve andleft the fused washer on there. Haven't had to worry about it since.

I keep a bag of new ones on hand. along with filters by the case. Sometimes an old one might get mixed in though.

I did my first oil change last week and had the same issue.
At first I thought maybe it was part of the pan because it was so stuck.
I ended up tapping on it sideways like stated above and it popped loose.

The longer you leave an old washer on the harder it will be to remove. Then you'll really run the risk of scratching the mating surface.

To avoid scratching the oil pan remove the stuck washer with wood or plastic (plastic scraper or putty knife works great.) Work it from right to left... the preferred angle is 27 degrees off center parallel to the bottom of the engine block. Do not force it... maximum pressure should be kept below 390 foot lbs. If that doesn't do it grab a chisel and a big hammer. Remember... safety first!
