70-80mph and you are averaging 21mpg? Holy buckets.

That's fantastic mileage. I wonder how many people complaining about mileage have aftermarket stuff on their trucks. I get 15, but I have a lift, big tires, and drive in stop and go traffic 90% of the time. I'm going on a road trip tomorrow on clear freeways, so I'm curious to see what I will get.

I have aftermarket items, 1.5" lift, some armor under the truck and a cap. However I never saw that kind of mileage in stock form prior to the add-ons.

I expected to lose 2-3mpg off the average with some mods but I'm like 7mpg off in most cases.

Overall it only mildly pisses me off. Like everyone else- I wasn't expecting a Prius. Just kinda hoping to see some realistic numbers. The big issue (for me), is that range is sometimes more critical than the actual mpg. Potentially I'm losing 70 miles, which in some areas in which I travel is a pretty big deal. I don't really want to carry gas in the bed either because I have hunting dogs back there.

I managed to average close to 20 with my 2011 TRD off road with a plus 1 c-rated Hankook Dynapro. no lift though and im probably 70-80% hwy. I think this truck and trans are able to get significantly better than the 2nd gen in ideal circumstances and then get worse in worse case scenarios, ie. head wind, heavy, bigger tires, lift, etc. I think that is why the big difference between essentially the same truck. This will be my best tank. I thnk the key is keeping it out of 4th on the hwy. I've found with a head wind it struggles to even maintain 65 without kicking down and mileage drops quick. also seems to suffer more with city driving than 2nd gen.

Ill be purchasing 2017 in 2 weeks. 4x2 TRDDC V6 and very curious to see what stock truck MPG I will get on the highway. Will be doing 150 or so miles. BTW my previous truck was a 2004 quad Dakota which I would always get 17-18 Once in a while 19.

I own a 2017 TRD Sport 4X2 and avg 22.5 mpg combined. Mind you I don't drive around with a lead foot. Prior to owning this new Tacoma I was always a sports car with lots of horsepower type of owner. So I drive the Tacoma pretty mellow and have no intentions of getting from Point A to Point B in the fastest time possible anymore. <Pat on back>

    - Have a Toyota Tonneau cover
    - Use 87 octane gas

And yes the power rear slider is badass

My truck seems to get better and better. 15,000 miles now, recent trip got 24.4 mpg, over half that at about 67 or so, the rest, 57 mph. On my vacation in Sept., doing 75+, down to 18 to 20 mpg. I believe its the synthetic oil, not allowing the engine to break in early, could be wrong with engines designed with the metals of today. A short trip a week ago of 70 miles maybe, I got 28 mpg, so good mileage can be had.

I just drove 600 miles today. Fully loaded for camping/hunting for a week, 2 dogs with me.

Put the stock rims and tires back on, both fuel ups ethanol free, got 18mpg and 17.5mpg, mostly 2 lane highway 70-75 mph.

Better than the Ohio trip, but I used ethanol free this time.

I guess I'm damn lucky this time. I had a 12' TRD SR5 Tundra (4.6L V8) that would get, at best 13 mpg city, 19 hwy going 60-70 mph. We live about 120 miles above PCB, FL so my trips are mainly to there and back and since it is 2-lane 65-70 is max speed (unless you want to pay $150 plus 3 points on your license). My 2016 SR5 V6 DCSB now has 11K on the clock. I consistently get 17-18 mpg in town (pop. 15,000-constant stop/start). Yesterday I went to the beach and back (250 total miles) and it took 10 gallons on the dot. My indicator said I was averaging 25.3 mpg so the actual was very close. Basically I have gotten the EPA estimate on the sticker (city/hwy) from essentially the git-go. I did see a slight increase after the transmission re-flash but only slightly. I only use Chevron 87 (unless not available). I have never used the ECT? even pulling my enclosed 5 X 10 MC trailer and rarely experience gear searching even with cruise control (also which I rarely use). Although, my mpg did drop to 15-16 pulling the trailer with bike. Bottom line, I'm basically pleased with my mpg for a change.

I just parked and thought I'd snap it. Used to get 17 to 18 mpgs but lately been getting high 19s to 20. I did put in 89 ethanol free gas.

I just bought a 17 TRD Sport. My very first tank of gas averaged an amazing 21.9 MPG in city driving. Other than a hard bed cover, it is stock. I am only half way through my second tank of gas and it is about the same.

So the trip MPG that you see when you shut off your truck HAS to be wrong, and calculated differently than the longer term in the ECO app. I constantly see 21-24 mpg after a trip. However, the ECO app is always right around 20 mpg, and that matches pretty close what I'll get if I calculate by hand.

If I'm really getting around 20, I should have some trips below 20 to balance it out. I think that's a feel good number that is not very accurate. At least on my truck, ymmv.

I wonder why some trucks do well, and others don't. Bad computer programming?
