isthatahemi, do you think my switch will be a problem? I was planning on taking my truck in to get the transmision looked at sometime soon. Is that somewhere they'll be looking? If worse come to worse I can take it out, put some grey kydex I have for a center console holster in the hole to plug it up, and tape the wire (I cut it low to hide it better incase I had to). I already had to "mod" the piston for the glove box so it would stay in so if they ask about the hole I could just say its from me trying to make up a new way to hold it in place.

Most of the Powertrain Control Modules are located there from what I understand. I would remove the switch, and hide the mod under 3M brand electrical tape. Mind you, this isn't a mod that would void any warranty, except maybe on your ABS pump or Brake booster.

Yup. That's what I was hinting at.....
Side Rant - Why do some dealers go out of there way to screw guys out of warranty, others casually ask if they find a mod, and still warranty everything!

The more I drive my truck off road, the more it impresses me. Because I am not the only one curious about all the new drive modes, I have added the following to my signature on this forum. Baja was great last weekend... the new Tacoma excelled! TRAC and A-TRAC rule!

I did the mod today and it works GREAT! :taco::taco: I was a bit concerned because my connector did not look exactly as above. My third wire down was a yellow wire. I was able to try it out in my snow filled driveway, both with trac on & off. Thanks Isthatahemi.

'A-TRAC' is 'TRAC' in L4 or different???
    --------------------------------------------------------------------
    Isthatahemi,

Please humor me, I am getting old, I guess!... In re-reading this thread I see you repeat saying the yellow wire mod gives one 'TRAC in L4'... and also say that A-TRAC works different or firmer on your new Tacoma.

I was under the impression that new A-TRAC gave us what cutting the yellow wire did for the non A-TRAC Tacomas. Are they not the same? Should we with A-TRAC also cut the wire so we have 'TRAC' in L4, as well as A-TRAC?

Can you tell me what is different or what is working different between A-TRAC and the yellow wire mod for TRAC in L4 mod?

As I have posted elsewhere, I have now used TRAC (H4) and A-TRAC (L4) in sand, snow and hill climbs... far superior to my 2005 4WD with open differentials and rear locker only!

    Thank you!

Track is on 4wd offroad models only. For the rest of us with 09-10 non offroad we only have track in 4hi stock. for trac in 4lo we need to do the yellow wire mod. Isthatahemi originally had a non trd offroad tacoma but has since left us. he now owns a trd offroad so he has atrac

    Yes, I understood that...

but Ishatahemi made it sound like his new A-TRAC Tacoma (like mine) operates different than his last one (with the yellow wire mod).

So, I wanted to know what (if anything) is different, mechanically between the new A-TRAC and the old yellow wire mod (TRAC in L4).

He said that TRAC in L4 is smoother, etc. vs. the more aggressive acting A-TRAC which was pretty close to true lockers front and rear. So, I either mis-understood or mis-read him.... or there is a difference between TRAC in L4 and A-TRAC in L4.

Thanks for trying to help, but I think only hemi can answer.

Sorry i misunderstood. You are right on track though. A-trac is a much more aggressive version of TRAC. They both work the same way by applying brakes to the wheels with slippage. However, the sensors on the Atrac are way more sensitive and apply the brakes sooner and harder than TRAC does. Trac is actually designed for the street in 4hi so when one wheel starts slipping the system takes quite a bit of time to activate making it a smoother transition of power, whereas ATRAC is meant to be used only in 4lo. it senses slipping instantly and applies the brakes hard making it moan groan and chatter.

    Yah, it is noisy...

So, TRAC in L4 and A-TRAC is more like comparing TRAC to AUTO LSD for the 2WD mode... Both are LSD, but AUTO LSD brakes harder and there is no power regulation... yes?

A-TRAC is AUTO LSD in L4 perhaps?

So, if we in the A-TRAC Tacomas cut the yellow wire we can have TRAC in L4 and A-TRAC, too... yes??? That would bring up the number of drive modes available... Not sure if I can make my signature any longer! LOL

I just wanna thank all you guys for figuring this stuff out and explaining it in a way that a simpleton like me can understand, and a special thumbs up to isthatahemi and yoytoda for bringing this mod to our attention. I really couldn't make heads nor tales of the manual. It's threads like this that make this such a great site.

Tell me about it! The salesmen couldn't explain it and even the managers in the service department or mechanics could esplain it or even know what it has! The manual was almost NO help! I had to make my signature the way I did (until all new Tacoma owners understand the 9 drive modes they have and how they work)...

I am still trying to figure stuff out, that's why I am asking Hemi to clear a few things up...
