According to that article Toyota is expanding their inspections from 2005-2008 to 2005-2010, makes you wonder why they stopped at 2010 and not cover till 2015? I thought Toyota made changes after the 2008 model frame, but I guess they have the same corrosion issues as the earlier frames.

Yea that is not very confidence inspiring, reading that. I mean it's good they are covering it but I was under the impression the issue got better in 2009/2010. Guess not

What would make a 2011 frame any different than 2010 frame? I was also under the impression, when Toyota changed from Dana to the new supplier, that the corrosion problems were fixed in the 2009 frame on.

I thought they changed suppliers, like you said. Must not have made a difference.

Well, it's good to see the people here with perforated frames after the 3/31/16 deadline have some hope now and aren't stuck with a 10 year old truck that won't pass inspection, being basically a giant paperweight.

There was a mother on TW, that said her son just bought a 2005 and 2 months later it didn't pass inspection because of a perforation, so I hope her son still has his truck and will get a new frame. She contacted a lawyer in Arkansas to start a class action lawsuit and might be one of the states in that article.

    You're right.

What a shame that that such an otherwise fine vehicle is susceptible to this problem.

I assume that letters will have to be sent to owners of 2009-10 tacomas now requiring a frame inspection.I was also assured that when Toyota switched vendors that the frame rust issue was resolved.Apparently this is not the case.

I've got a 3rd Gen but have been following this story for awhile now.
this quote from the Wall Street Journal...
consumers will be entitled to an inspection of their vehicles and ultimately replacement of its frame if the car is found to have the faulty rust protection. Car owners who already have replaced their frames will also be reimbursed.
Court documents peg the cost of inspection to Toyota under the accord at $90 a vehicle and to replace each frame at $15,000.

(just google the headline if you can't read the whole story)

Does this mean all 05-10 Tacomas now have a 12-year in service sort of thing like the 1st gens?

    Same as everybody else...
I was aware of the frame rust issue when I bought my 09 PR in 2015. I crawled under the truck and the frame looked fine, some minor surface type rust but nothing to be concerned about. The truck spent it's entire life in Richmond Va. Now that I am a little wiser with things Tacoma I'm wondering if the frame has already been replaced, it almost looks too good if that makes sense. I haven't had any issues with the truck at all so if it has a new frame that's fine by me, just curious I guess. Other than the fact that it looks so good is there any other way to tell if it's been swapped?I see a barcode label on the frame would that give me any info?

As long as it's in good shape, does it really matter?

If so, you might be able to sweet talk a dealer into running the VIN and see what they find on the Toyota history.

    Here's are my guesses.........

    - You have an original frame.

    - The 'extension' of years is a court negotiated part of the settlement, mostly 'feel good' stuff, not indicative of a continuing problem.

    - Because Toyota had already provided remedy/relief and bought back or changed hundreds of frames, they are already deep into their settlement costs. No one is going to get a 'second' frame.

    - There will still be a set of rules to play by. Those who have failures that don't follow the prescribed remedy will be out of luck.

Some folks will benefit from this settlement. Probably more than in the past. But it's still prudent to take care of your own stuff if you live in brine country. The frame is all that's covered. Even if it doesn't rust to the point of failure, hundreds of other bits under there will be damaged, on your nickel.

The dealer sprayed on that undercoating on the frame my '05 about a year and a half ago for that safety recall, over the rust that was already there. (I had hopes that they would do some sandblasting or something... ha ha) Of course, most of it had fallen off over the next 6 months or so, and looks almost as bad as it ever did. So I'm guessing this settlement means they get to look over my frame one more time over the next year and then they're done with me?

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
Or it did make a difference and they're being preventative and showing a good face

My 2012 has a bunch of surface rust already. This is how my 06 looked before it went downhill fast

Any vehicle frame is subject to rust. Ya'll act like only Toyota has this problem. EVERY SINGLE used car buying guide says check for frame rust and walk away if it's too bad. Grind/sand/what have you and paint it over and stop whining. If you bought one that is majorly jacked up or you let yours get that bad you deserve it.
