My 2016 Tacoma did the same exact thing. TSB never helped me either. I drove the Canyon and liked it also, but I eventually traded mine off for a F150 3.5L EB and couldn't be happier. Sounds like we had the exact same problems with our Taco's.

anyone ever drive their truck and have a consistent speedometer reading but feel the truck lurching/revving along like as if you were feathering the gas peddle?
been feeling it alot all of the sudden, right before i had my 10k servicing and its continued since.

I wish i could just call toyota up and convince them to rip out this engine and transmission and put in the 2nd Gen... then this truck would be damn near perfect

Yes! It's driving me crazy! I think I'm done. My truck has 1892 miles and I am sickened at how corporate have treated these issues. Mainly the low transmission oil fiasco but also the laughable automatic transmission ( with tow package) as a whole.

This has been the most difficult for me to describe to the dealer. Surging, lurching, skipping, jerking, revving, sometimes masks as a miss feeling in the firing system or fuel feed interruption sensation, you nailed it save the drivetrain issues this truck too for me is near perfect. Toyota is aware of these issues as well as the gear hunting, however to this date there is no resolution. Frustrated we are as for many of the owners are Tacoma faithful over the years, here's hoping Toyota mounts an effort to correct Tacoma owner concerns, we have placed faith and $$s into their new, updated, improved truck, it seems it is time for Toyota to deliver. Toyota has for many of you issued extended warranties ( extended service agreements) to try and soothe your wounds and instill once again confidence in their product. For all having had no issues with generation three, great for you, but for the afflicted owners and Tacomas time has come to correct issues, my four previous gen. Two Tacomas were and remain bullet proof, deliver the dependability and we will shut up. Mikey4x4 out!

So this thread is massive and I have searched through and didn't notice this specifically so wanted to toss it out. I have been noticing a very audible noise and jerk when the truck is downshifting as I come to a stop sign. It only happens shifting down from second to first gear but it is definitely something I can feel and hear. It doesn't happen all the time and seems to happen more so when the truck is first started but can happen at about any time. Anyone notice anything similar? Any advice by chance?

I too, like many, are in the same boat.
There is a very noticeable CLUNK for 2nd gear to 1st. This typically happens first thing in the morning wether it be 35 or 70F outside. I thought if I let the truck warm up first, this effort is merely in vain.

It's now all too constant, I have switched to "manual" while driving around town, it helps. Actually, this has temporarily helped me from cursing at my dashboard.

Have you had the trans fluid checked by chance? My dealer claimed they did and said it was full but many of the folks on here claim their fluid is low. Not sure entirely but would like to make figure out a resolution before major damage.

Do you mean the constant shifting when using cruise going up hills?

I replaced the transmission oil as soon as I discovered it was low. Very low! Thanks again to Gearcruncher.

The lurch/surge/misfire feeling has been my only real issue with the truck. Everyone who rides with me feels it too. When I went in for my 5k service, the advisor said just about every 3rd gen Tacoma owner has complained about it or some other type of transmission issue and that there's nothing they can do until a tsb potentially fixes it. Initially I thought I'd keep the truck 200k+... but now I think I'll trade it before 10k.

I've been thinking about changing out my transmission oil too. Was it improvement for you? What oil did you use?

Yep, not only do I now have a shift flare when cold, sometimes when I'm driving along at steady speed the RPM's go up between shifts and I just look at the tach and go WTH! I'm taking mine in this week, then thinking about getting rid of it, getting tired of this and the diesel sounding tick tock engine.

mine does it when im coming to a stop in my automatic and i had been wondering if it was my breaks because when it shifts down even when i have my foot on the break the truck jumps forward.... im worried one of these days its gonna cause me to bump someone

and here is a new one that has me really bothered. I had to slam the pedal a couple times today while on the highway cause of the same driver trying to kill me and the engine did some CRAZY RPM jumps and the truck didnt even move like i had touched the pedal until about 3 seconds later, and then i got to smell the most lovely smell..... the smell of a clutch burning in a manual transmission....

got off the highway and tested it a few times on empty roads and got the same odor.... this truck is really making me question my safety while driving it let alone needing to rely on it.... any thoughts?

I was about to be T boned by a car, stomped on the gas pedal, nothing, a couple of seconds of nothing, then the other vehicle veered away, just waiting for the first lawsuit against Toyota for making such an unresponsive vehicle when accelerating to get out of trouble. Hmmm, with the 3.4 Billion dollar rusting frame settlement they aren't going to have a very good future.

Mine did all these at the beginning, even after TSB and top of the ATF. Currently she has about 18k miles on her and I haven't had issues since my 15k service. Don't know about anyone else as I can only speak of mine. But mine has gotten tons better with age. I don't even give it a thought anymore bc it has really really improved. Dealer told me I had one of the few without such bad issues.

As far as sluggish and lethargic throttle feel, I HIGHLY recommend a K&N drop in filter. Reset the battery drop it in and my throttle response is nicce. I can even squeel the tires at a stop now...lol

I just want to say that my K&N CAI did make a huge difference. I still have some minor 1-2 and 2-3 shift issues but helping it breathe did help in the power needs. I too can bark tires. My problem still is, on normal acceleration, that I am in 4th gear by 30 mph when NOT using ect. But when I nail it she goes. I am now 2 months into using ect up to cruising speed and that cures everything. Just gets old doing it. Often I find myself cruising at 40-45 mph still in ect. Still a pain but beats the way it shifts without it.
