2016 and 2017 Shift Flare is Declared Characteristic

You should know by now that these guys spent a whopping $35k on a Tacoma. It should compare to a $250k+ rolls Royce

 

If you had this problem I'm sure you would be like wtf.

If I don't let off the gas it will slip over 2k rpms.

 

not a mechanic and wondering this also- why is the shift flair so important- especially if Toyota dismisses it as characteristic of the transmission?

 

Up to to 2krpms from what, 1600? Does it go away after the truck warms up?

I don't have the symptom but I know the 2nd gens suffer from it along with alot of other car and truck brands that use Aisin automatic transmissions. Anyone know of it escalating to a direct transmission failure in a Toyota?

Between 1600 and 1800 rpm. It goes away but comes back after sitting for a hour or so.

Fluid has been checked, TSB installed. Told the same as others here from corporate that it is characteristic of the transmission.

 

Unless the aftermarket releases a kit for the 3rd gen to install like Sonnax did for the 2nd gen you will probably continue to have the symptom.

Yes. The fluid was checked manually. You are right. This is not a normal behavior for a correctly designed transmission.

 

Good question JS. The transmission can out in 2016. We will know the answer after the waranty runs out.

The shift flare started after they applied the TSB - on my truck.

 

I am being patient with the hope a fix comes out. I really like the truck, even tried out a manual on Friday. Dealer even offered me to take it for the weekend. I'll give it a few more months.

 

I actually agree with you. I have the 3-4 flare and only on the first drive in the morning. It flares but does shift smoothly so it could be a harmless characteristic.

But the trans does not shift like I'm used to. Perhaps this is the new normal. I sure hope not.

Edit: it's happened maybe 3-4 times since I've had it. Currently at 2600 miles

 

How long from since you had the TSB performed?

I also expect with temps dropping and trans fluid temps being cooler the flare might become more pronounced. Whether it hurts the truck or not I don't know but we'll likely see a rash of more reports as more trucks are on the road, weather is getting colder and now readers are going to be hyper - sensitive now to reporting it.
