I was having issues with my TRD off Road 4x4 with shifting so I decided to bring it in to get checked out and possibly get the TSB done. I also had them check the fluid levels in the transmission and rear diff and stated I had a howl at 55+ mph.
They called me today and stated the fluid levels were good and performed the TSB. They took the truck out to check for the howl and were able to duplicate and contacted Toyota. Toyota said to replace the diff and sending a new one under warranty. Hopefully it goes well. I saw some people had mentioned a diff thing but I didn't expect this.

Anyone know if this is covered under 100 Km driveline warranty-or excluded?

I have the same typical issue but waiting to see if it gets worse and replace at 99 0000 if so.

I would assume it's under the drivetrain warranty.

Kinda gives me an uneasy feeling. This is my first new truck, first Toyota and the most expensive vehicle I've purchased. I hope after this the truck is reliable and stands up to the reputation. I love the truck otherwise

This is definitely from the rear. I have the other one you mentioned but I can only hear that one when my drivers window is down but it doesn't bother me. It sounds like someone is blowing over a bottle top.

If you have both you might as well have them fix the LCA also, here is the TSB:

I just updated my tires to Nitto Grappler 265/70/17 and wheels to TRD. I don't hear the howling sound any more but I know it is still there. I am waiting on a real solution TSB from Toyota to address this howling sound. I kept my OEM tires and wheels so when I go in to get the howling sound fixed I will just put on the OEM tires and wheels. I don't want no crap from Toyota saying that my tires and wheels caused the howling sound

Oh and by the way, when I took it in for my 5000 maintenance they confirmed and documented that the diff was making a howling noise. This was before I replaced my tires and wheels

Everything so far is good. They even did the LCA TSB as well to eliminate that howl before diagnosing the diff. My commute is about 22 miles combined city and highway. The howl is gone from the rear and OMG the Transmission TSB worked wonders, feels like a different truck. Smoother, coasts a lot better and most importantly goes up hill without feeling like I'm towing a sled. Not sure if some may have been due to the diff but I'm happy so far. Always felt like the truck was in the wrong gear...

I heard the howling noise, front AND rear, on my 2017. Only 1k miles on the truck. Dealer said there is no TSB for 2017 yet so they can't do nothing and advised me to wait. I asked them to sell me the plugs and I'll install myself, they said that has to special order. WTH?

Yes, I'll wait for 2017 4Runner to be released and trade in.

Oh, and wind noise coming from the rear window is terrible compare to 2nd gen. It sound like the rear window is opened.

With so many turd gen owners trading for made in Japan 4Runner

I wonder if 4Runner sales are going through the roof

Not sure about 2017 4Runner, but the dealer where I bought the Tacoma agreed with invoice price on the 2016 model. But I preferred to wait a couple months to see what's new on the 2017 model.

I think I might have got a good one.... It had oil in it (full) when I checked.... the front diff took a cup or more though..!

No noise that I notice on mine, but only got about 8,000 kms on it.

So are you due for another replacement?

Should we expect a new differential at every oil change interval?
