Let's See Some Softoppers

I wasn't sure how it would fit when I folded the canvas down, but I was thinking of mounting the velcro to the top of the gate. Some of you might not be aware, but the top can be moved forward or backward in the utility tracks on the third gen, so I can always move it backward if I don't like where it is now.

 

So where does everyone keep their highlift jack or rotopax or other off-road equipment with a softtop? Especially if one builds a sleeping platform

 

I don't use a platform, and I just put things in the bed of my truck.

^^ A couple of questions about the inside front attachment of the SoftTopper itself (not HiLift). Has anyone tried attaching the flap to the front bed track instead of drilling the front wall of the bed? Second, is there still a weather flap over the front of the bed wall, to divert rain to the outside? I understand the inner flap to help secure the top fabric, but I've never seen pictures of the outside front. And if you run with the sides and back rolled up, can you also roll up the front wall for better visibility/cab ventilation/pass-through? Thanks.

 

In the order you asked. ..

Good idea for securing the front inner flap. I've never seen it done but punching 3 holes in the inner flap and installing 3/8" brass grommets should work perfectly.

The outside front weather flap just hangs loose between the bed and cab.

I suppose you could roll up the front if you installed straps and buckles. I would watch it closely to make sure that nothing odd happens with the airflow that might tear the topper off.

I like it, but you don't sleep in the truck bed I'm assuming?

 

I dont. But if it was a long bed there would be enough room for one. I think the answer with a sleeping platform is to put everything underneath the platform.

 

@steelhd .... is your top charcoal (gray)? If so do you have pictures? I'm considering a SoftTopper and haven't found many pictures of gray on a silver Tacoma, specifically 2nd or 3rd gen DCSB.

 

let us know which color you go with. I had the same dilemma, ended up with black and couldn't he happier. This.color combo is wicked

 

Does anyone know if you can run the soft topper without the front window??? Here's why

I guess you could if you want to run without a rear flap and window. While driving the airflow would blow the topper up like a balloon, blast open the rear flap, and make a heck of a wind tunnel.

 

What if I notched the top and bottom of the window to fit around the tubes?.

 

I don't see why not. Talk to a company that makes or repairs boat covers, jeep tops, or convertible car tops. They should be able to easily modify a Softopper to fit.

Yes and I'm certain it will work and be a slick solution. All the parts are sitting in a box but I haven't installed then yet because I just HATE to splice into perfectly good fully functional electrical wiring. Introduced too many gremlins back in the day when I didn't know WTF I was doing. If you are interested send me a PM and I will give you the parts list and a narrative of what I have planned.
