.... ^^^ ... I watched Lockheed build those C-5's in Marietta, GA ... and take off and land over Hwy. 41 ... felt like you could reach up and touch them as they landed.

Nothing about the C5 is seat-of-the-pants - everything is carefully calculated.

I just sent this to my brother, who was a flight engineer on C5s for 8 years. Waiting on his reaction and comments.

Ok, he says the runway was all paved and clean. The dust thrown up is from the gravel on the sides of the runway. It's a narrow strip, and FRED is quite wide. They know exactly how much runway is needed based on their weight and air pressure.

One of the more recent accidents with the C-5 occurred at Dover AFB. This is the recreation of it with flight data, voice data of the CVR. It is a great teaching tool and not meant to ridicule the crew.

I was flying Friday night and kept noticing very bright flashes on the ground at about my 8 o'clock. I was frantically looking around for traffic and wondering why Center wasn't telling me about it. Flash after flash made me say to myself, "WTF is happening? Am I about to get abducted by aliens?" Well I end up crossing a fairly large lake and realized that it was the reflection of the moon in all the little ponds I was passing. The bodies of water were small enough to not show the entire moon in the reflection so I couldn't see what it was. Once I saw the whole reflection in the large lake I felt like a dummy. I couldn't see the moon itself because it was above and behind me - right where the wing on the Cardinal is. I finally saw it when I was turning in for landing and holy cow was that thing BRIGHT!
So much noise, so slow to accelerate......just like my truck

Have to fly from Dallas to Nashville in mid December one-way. Both American and Southwest are the same price and direct. Same times as well.

Anyone have a preference one over the other, DFW or Love/American or Southwest?

Southwest! Help fund my college :D But really, Dallas Love is 10000x better to travel through than DFW. You also get to pick your seat, which means you are less likely to get stuck next to the man that steals your arm rest and spills his shoulder on to your side

I've been flying them a ton recently but flew through DFW last time.

And what special backdoor deal are you getting where you get to pick your seat on Southwest?

There has never been seat assignments on Southwest. I'm not talking about your boarding position. That depends on when you bought your ticket and if you're one of those fancy frequent flyer or gold member nonsense people

Love Field will probably be less crowded, though still crowded because of the time of year. You're going to be flying when us non-rev passengers stay home :D
