It's a group III basestock. All synthetics are made from group III to group IV base stocks, and rarely does any synthetic contain only one base stock - oil additives are not all soluble in the same base stock.

Mobil 1 SuperSyn is predominantly a PAO base stock (group IV) with a significant portion of group III (hydrocracked). Other formulations I'm less sure about.

In any event, it hardly matters. It's the behavior of the fluids that are important.

What are you referring to? I use syntec in my 300,000 plus miles doesn't use any oil '93.

Cut & broke off stuff. Prolific ziptie and tape usage.
Other: Used M1 for a while, then switched to Penzoil Platinum because there was a major sale on it the last time I needed oil. Have always used OEM filter. Have 68000 miles on truck now, used synthetic since 37000. Dealer did the oil before that.

Between whatever the dealer used, M1, and Penz Plat., I never saw a change in MPG and performance felt same.

I'm only using synthetic for it's thermal stability and as long as I can find good prices on it (O'Reily in GA periodically had it for less than $4/qt). Hopefully I can find the same sales in TN now that I moved.

I will say that the Pen. Platinum might clean better than M1 or OEM. I just recently changed out the first run of Penz. The filler cap on the engine use to have sludge-like stuff in it that I would wipe out and it would be back by the next change. Since using the Penz, the gunk didn't come back.

Oh, when I had my 88 pre-taco 2 wheel drive with the 2.2R engine,it had used normal Castrol dino oil from the first oil change. Changed it every 3000 miles and used cheap Fram filter. When that truck had 180,000 miles on it, you could still hardly tell a difference in color between the old oil and the new oil when changing it.

This is called "moisture sludge" and is most commonly caused by repeated short trips in the truck where the engine isn't up to operating temp long enough to boil all the condensed moisture off the crank case. Ideally, you should let your engine operate *at full operating temp* for about 20 minutes each week to prevent this. An enjoyable sunday drive does the trick nicely.

Never heard of them..... But what company would not hype up their product and denounce all others on their own site.... I would trust an unbiased/ 3rd party site that has scietific data instead of a flash bar.

Always have used Castrol.. thinking about trying Royal Purple thought in my new Taco. No real reason other than I found some at a local store for a comparible price to Castrol.

Thanks for that info. I had never bothered to look it up. Maybe it wasn't the Penzoil that cleaned stuff then because I moved not so long ago and now have a 80 mile round trip commute to work.

Most commonly forms on the filler cap because that's lower temp than the rest of the engine.

Mobil 1 is available everywhere, cheap, protects, and helps the truck start at 30 below zero.

Brand isn't as important as the frequency of change. If you go 10k without a change you should be using one of the better brands (I'm not going to jump into that fire). Any of the three choices in the pole should work. If you change at the 3k to 5k range, about any synthetic should do fine.

I've been using petro since day one in my 2006 TRD castrol gtx 5-30 I was always told (old school) that you can't switch back and forth from petro and synthetic true? I currently change oil every 3k about 3 times a year... How often is it required for syn? I just have 28k on my Taco now..

You can switch between synthetic and conventional oil. They mix fine, in fact, they sell it as synthetic blend.
