3rd Gen DIY maintenance quick reference

Been a member of m3forum for almost 10 years, I've never taken my car to a shop with exception for alignments, with that said, it is common knowledge at least on that forums( yea I know car vs truck) that redline breaks down quickly, if you do use it, be aware that's you'll probably want to replace it in shorter intervals.

 

Bottle of RL has some sort of Toyota approval or recommendation, but using a synthetic lube doesn't mean "extended" service intervals. Agree with Hank.

 

I don't know why people stray from oe fluids not knowing that aftermarket might have adverse effects.
If I absolutely had to, I may go amsoil first, and possibly rp (pending manufacturers approval) id never go redline

 

Toyota doesn't make engine oil. They simply rebrand someone else's oil just like a lot of other manufacturers. Mobil 1, Valvoline, many other great engine oils out there at a lower cost. Buying OEM means nothing when it comes to that.

 

Yea, but there's Toyota formulation, on bitog it is considered one of the best 0-20 synthetics out there. Your truck and your money, you do as you see fit, but making a blanket statement with no data to back up your "there's better than oem toyota" doesn't mean much.

Any info on spark plug maintenance/change?

 

My 2017 Warranty & Maintenance Guide states a 60,000 mile / 72 month interval to change spark plugs on the 2GR-FKS (V6)engine.

For the V6, the 2016 service manual PDF that's floating around indicates the plug is Denso FK20HBR8, with new plug gapping of 0.7 to 0.8 mm (0.0276 to 0.0315 in.) and 18 Nm torque spec. Ignition coil attachment torque spec of 10 Nm, and wire harness bracket is 8 Nm.

When do you guys change the rear diff fluid on a new truck due to shavings and break in?

5k miles?

 

Technically 500-600 miles if you go based on new aftermarket gear installs.

 

I'm just stock with a lot of freeway miles

You'll be fine. Diff fluid is probably the most over looked fluid out there. People with 200K on their trucks and have never changed it, they don't even know it's there. I was going to do mine early also however i'll be having 4.88 gears installed soon so I didn't bother.

 

I need to show this video to the stupid service team leader at my local dealer. She tried to tell me that over servicing the u-joints could cause a failure
and void the warranty.
