Closing the accounts can actually hurt your credit. Best advice to your would be to take the cards and lock them up in a safe(or have a friend do it for you)so that in case of emergency you have access to them but they aren't in your wallet to make it easy to use.

    Cut them up now.

Have an emergency fund. Don't rely on a credit card for emergencies.

Good point, but usually not an issue as long as you have some form of reported recurring payment(s) being made.

I was planning on canceling my Discover and getting one of the Southwest Visa cards. Would I be ok to do that or do I need to keep the Discover also?

So much to learn with handling credit and best ways to do everything. :goingcrazy: money planning is something they should teach in high school cause I'm learning as I go.

Didn't you have issues with racking credit card debt a year or two ago?

You need to know the Pythagorean theorem but not how to balance a checkbook according to the school system.

My opinion, and that's all this is ;), is that I would go ahead and cancel/get the new one, if it makes sense for you. As far as your credit score, my understanding is you might take a small hit doing that. They look at the max credit you have, vs. the amount actually carried (closer you are to max, worse your score gets hit), pattern of making on-time payments, and longevity of the account. There's much more I believe, but since the credit scorers don't allow their formulas out, it's all a fair amount of guesswork.

I set my account to autopay at least the minimum to ensure I never miss a payment so there's no issue there. The account is relatively new though, 3-4 years

    Hey, there's an idea!

Also, I got my tolltag bill today. The last time I was on a toll road was in August

God do I believe this to be true. When I was a manager at Old Navy I would often have to explain to my employees about budgeting and money planning and how to try and be financially responsible because they didn't have a clue. Most of them had parents who were in terrible debt because they were obviously never taught these skills either.
