!Cheap K&N air filters!

Just bought a K&N airfilter for my 08 4.0 V6 at the local O'riellys auto parts store. List price was $78 and some change, i got it for $44 dollars plus tax! I asked if this was a sale price and they said that was the everyday price. I looked online and the best price i found was $44 plus tax and shipping. Just wanted to let you guys know!

 

I hope you don't offroad much! otherwise it is a great deal!

 

i dont offroad much at all, mostly highway with the occasional dirt road; but why?

 

I think I paid the same at VatoZone. Plus I get a military discount on top of that. I wouldn't call that the best of deals.

 

If you drive in dusty/offroad conditions a lot - the K&N filter needs cleaned more frequently.

When I had one, I cleaned it once every 6 months.

For non dusty conditions, etc....I'd recommend cleaning it once a year and don't over oil it. Have a spare paper filter to put in the truck while the K&N dries overnight.

 

$44 is the same price in store at 4Wheel Parts and at Auto Zone

 

Every 6 months, are you nuts? lol. I clean mine every oil change (which equates to about every 2 months at 5k intervals... castrol GTX synthetic). I've never had any problems with oil based filters nor any of my buddies, from my G35, the taco, to my roomies cavi. And we live in AZ, driving through 'dirt storms' all the time. :shrug:

Also I paid around 50 after taxes at autozone for my drop-in.

 

I usually go about every 3 months on cleaning my air filter. I went home about 3 weeks ago. On my drive back down there was a sand storm. As soon as I got back into Tucson, I pulled my air filter and cleaned it.

 

The dirtier the K&N is the better it works.

 

I take mine to the sand dunes. I've had it on for a couple months, I've been wanting to clean the engine area, so I'll check it and see how it is doing. I run k&n on all my quads also, never had a problem.

 

No probs here with the k&n,most of you are cleaning them too much.As for dust in the air box I had that happen with the afe dry POS. A dirty k&n filters much better than that street car filter.

 

Should be done every oil change for optimum performance and protection.

 

Most of you on here need to do a bit more research on filtering ability vs. air flow (for a clean and dirty filter) with an oiled gauze (K&N), oiled foam, paper and micro-fiber filter to really understand what the trade-offs are, because there are trade-offs.

 

Can you give a quick break down.

I've been cleaning foam filters since I was 5 (raced dirtbikes my whole life), but I don't know the details on foam vs. microfiber vs. paper.

 

From the research that I've done, here is what I have. Note that microfiber is not listed as there wasn't any data I could find when I last looked into this a couple of years ago.

Clean filter - air flow (best down) : oiled gauze, oiled foam, paper
Clean filter - filtering (best down) : paper, oiled foam, oiled gauze
Dirty filter - air flow (best down) : oiled foam, paper, oiled gauze
Dirty filter - filtering (best down) : paper, oiled gauze, oiled foam

If you can find some graphs of this kind of data, it's more helpful to see the differences between the filters.

Misc data points:

• About 5-6 years ago Dodge recommended that no oiled gauze filters be used with their diesels. They were seeing, if i remember correctly, scarring of the cylinder walls and high silica levels in oil analysis' with engines that had used these filters
• bobistheoilguy - check into some of the oil analysis done, you will see many that showed all good except high silica levels (combusted dirt) in the oil, when owners asked what filter they used,,, more often then not some form of oiled gauze filter.
• Many people have stories of those who have used K&Ns for a quadrillion miles (OK, maybe a bit less...) with no engine problems. Could very well be, this raises the question of whether the lessened filtering ability of a clean oiled gauze filter is really significant over the long run. I don't know.

In my opinion, I couldn't justify less filtering ability for a bit more air flow. I can see very few cases where the stock setup will not flow a sufficient amount of air. Only case I can think of is someone (drag racers, "true" prerunners, etc.) who spends some amount of time on full throttle runs. In those cases ultimate air flow is required, easy enough to see there.

Unless I can see a need for ultimate airflow, I would be much more concerned with filtering ability.

Again, airflow vs. filtering, pick one.
