You should be fine to have fires at the knob as there are designated camping areas with rings all around it. If not at the top of the mountain, definitely at the bottom near Switzer lake

 

@NewRider some info please...

I am planning to come down Saturday evening via Trail 1 (the maintained gravel road) and go to a hotel in Harrisonburg. Any idea how long it will take in the dark?

If it is 4 hours up, and 4 hours down (and to Harrisonburg), I may bail... I am not interested in camping in what may be a cold rain, and a 4 hour dirt road after dark isn't appealing either.

 

What about hone quarry campground?
That's Friday nights camp location

 

Ok. Just got off the phone with the ranger. We can only burn fires at home quarry campground in that area. Anywhere else is considered back country and citations will be issued.

 

thats where we are camping right? so i don't see the problem, or why everyone is freaking out. the fire ban is only for back country camping. (where you would build your own rock ring. We are camping at a campground with a small fee... where we are aloud to have fires and use stoves!

 

@Truggin : the 4 hour guestimate is for trail 2. I'd say to hit pavement, on trail 1, in the dark, maybe an hour, it'll drop you south of hburg so you could find a hotel closer if you wanted.. otherwise probably a hour ride from top of mountain to town

 

Only issue. They have only 9 sites and allow 2 vehicles per site. @fatfurious2 was planning on camping Saturday up top. I'm fine not moving sites as we can setup and leave it there go wheel and come back.

 

I was not planning on camping on the top on Friday night.

Leave what where? And come back to what? I don't understand this

 

You talked about camping up top Saturday not Friday. And set up camp Friday and we can leave our gear Saturday when we roll out for the trail so nobody takes our sites.

 

Yea camping on Saturday. Leaving gear in the rain? Not anymore

 

I can live with that! Will it be marked somehow? (I don't wanna get lost )

off topic would anyone be interested in an extra grill from a 2008 tacoma. it has one spit where the chrome was chipping. would be a good grill to color match or satoshi mod with. 20 bucks takes it! also have a set of headlights that need new lenses. 5 bucks!
