Tundra to Tacoma

Anyone here downsize from a Tundra to a new Tacoma? What has your experience been like? Are you happy you made the switch? Regretting it? Why?

If I ask on the Tundra forum, There will just be more bias towards the Tundra. and visa versa. Maybe the best thing to do is ask on both.

i thought about it, but the tacoma is too small for what i needed it for. i do miss the tacoma size, mileage and space it had. i really REALLY miss the folding back seats and the compartments, the underseat floor storage, and a glovebox worth a damn.

Power-wise, i can't compare. I had a 14 TRD supercharged on 33's Taco to a 16 Tundra 5.7. The tacoma was definitely quicker. The 5.7 is slower now that i put 34's on it.

 

How do you like the MT in your TRD Pro Taco? I'm thinking about going with the MT OR, but I can't find one to test drive around me.

 

I did. I had a 2008 Tundra, got a CRV, then a Pilot, now in a 2016 Tacoma.

I dont know, I am not sure I can answer that. I like the Tacoma a lot. I think I actually liked my Tundra better.

The Tundra was significantly better on the highway. I mean NIGHT AND DAY better on the highway.

 

Love it. I had the 16 TRD OR with 6MT too. I ordered it without test driving. I mean it isn't a s2000 or Miata, but for a truck the 6MT fits it perfectly

What did you like better? size, comfort, power?

 

I looked at a '14 double cab Tundra recently, and those were my big complaints. I have those compartments full of things that I consider to be necessities in my Tacoma.

For whatever reason, that truck didn't have the under-seat bins, but apparently most double cab Tundras do. Why would you ever spec one without them? Guess it wasn't even an option on the CrewMax, which is even more nuts to me.

5.7L
4wd
8 feet bed

The power for sure. I had a 2008 4.7 liter and it never had to hunt for gears to maintain 80mph. I even towed with it occasionally and it was like it wasn't pulling anything.

I mean the comfort and quality from the Tundra to the Tacoma seems comparable to me. The interior size was nice sometimes but was unneeded.

I think my only real complaint is the highway. Other than that I have no regrets.

 

A local dealer has a 2013 Black Rock Warrior Tundra, 40k miles, certified near me for a great price. It's a sweet looking truck and the first Tundra that I've driven. I like it a lot better than my 2012 RAM. The only thing holding me back is I really like the look of the new Tacoma, but I haven't driven one yet.

Wish you could get a sunroof with the double cab, or the full size roll down rear window, or both.

 

Had a black 08 TRD edition. Put the 2012 sport painted front end on it and NFabs, bigger BF A/T tires. Good reliable truck.

Bought it when Toyota was having all the gas pedal recalls and such. Got it for a steal. In fact, I drove it for a few years and sold it for nearly what I paid for it.

 

You've mentioned twice about not liking the taco on the highway--how come?

 

Because its absolute garbage on the highway. It hunts for gears all the time. It wont maintain cruise control. I had a 2008 Honda Pilot with 249,000 miles that maintained 80mph no problem. Hell I could have set it to 95 and it would have maintained it.

I live in NEBRASKA. I can't even imagine how much it would hunt for gears given a real terrain. I am holding out hope that one of these transmission updates will do something. Otherwise I am just going to keep it until I can break even on it.

 

I had a 12' SR5 TRD Tundra...great truck, NO recalls or TSB's, great ride, sh!tty mpg. Sold it and got a 16 SR5 V6 DCSB Tacoma. Also a great truck after getting all the minor issues solved...protruding rear door window seal, low transmission fluid plus reflash, TSB for plugs in front frame (noise), replacement of front passenger's side bushing (squeaking). All done quickly, without question, and to my COMPLETE satisfaction by a super tech (and brought to my attention by the great members of TW). Presently I have 11K on the Tacoma...very good mileage...runs great BUT.....it definitely is NOT a Tundra. Just like my Harley FXDLI is not a Sportster. Both get the job done but are designed for totally different customer groups. For example, my Tundra could pull a house down...the Tacoma is great for going to the grocery store. Both would suck if the roles were reversed.
