All I can say is get the TSB 0077-16 enhancement installed. I bought my Tacoma used in September with 4,000 mi. drove 1,300 miles and was becoming completely underwhelmed with the performance, lagging shifts, park to reverse reverse to drive lag, cruise erratic in the 65 to 70 range. Took it in to a reputable dealer in NEO, the first one on Google search. They informed me previous owner had almost same complaints and took it into another reputable dealer in Akron area and they couldn't replicate, hmmm not on any car fax or anything even though the early 5k service was. I had to wrangle with them for 1 hour to get the TSB update done, "they couldn't replicate the issues and cruise is a known issue" and they weren't sure if they had the update? Huh, internet anyone, connected network perhaps? Regardless, they were nice finally installed and guess what . . . I couldn't be happier. It is like driving a different vehicle. I didn't tell my wife what I had done, she took truck to run errands and commented, the truck isn't doing that shifty thing anymore.

It is a shame for the first person how gave up on truck but saved me a 6th of the cost. Toyota should make this a mandatory "ask" when a truck is brought in.

Congrats on getting a good deal. Enjoy the TSB. Let us know when it goes away and you get the original crappy issues again. Figure on 1250 miles from now.

Yes, I have this exact same issue on my 2017. I have 1100 miles on it now. I've figured out that it only happens when cruising at a constant speed around 2000 RPM with ECT on. It is the ONLY issue that I have when ECT is enabled. When ECT is off, it will upshift to the next gear and the RPMs will drop to 1500 and there won't be any hesitation/surge/hesitation/surge.... However, it takes far too much foot-in-the-throttle to get moving. I tried to get used to it, but after a few days I decided that the responsiveness with ECT off is unacceptable for daily driving.

When ECT is on, it is very responsive and I'm still getting 21MPG on my daily commute to/from work on 35mph to 50mph roads (with a 3"/2" lift and 32.5" Michelin LTX 305/50R20 tires).
I've installed the Hypertech speedometer calibrator so my ECU should be reporting an accurate MPG per trip.

It doesnt last for too long. Had mine done a while back and its pretty much back to its old crappy habits. These trucks drive awesome once the trans learning/memory is cleared, but then once it starts learning again it all goes to crap.

Can the ECM be reprogrammed again by doing a hard reset (disconnecting the battery for a while)?

You can take it to the dealer and have them clear the learning (both short term and long term), or disconnect the battery for about 30 minutes which i was told only clears the short term learning. I have had the dealer clear it once and the truck drove amazing for about a month or so after. I have also disconnected my battery multiple times and after each time the truck drives great! At this point i think i am just going to keep disconnecting the battery once a month to make the truck drive better. The battery trick works for me an a bunch of others, but some have not noticed any real difference. Post TSB the truck drove great for about a month and then slowly reverted back to its old habits. Its better then it was before the TSB but not by much. That's just my experience. I have a feeling there is an issue with the transmission learning that might be causing issues since clearing it seems to fix everything for me. I wish they could disable the learning. Is that possible?

    I know, I know!
I used Toyota ATFWS. However this made no difference to the delay, surging etc. It did give me peace of mind there was enough in there.

Im going in next week for the TSB. I may even take the Tundra for a test ride while I'm there……….

Thanks for the updates. I kept thinking I was having some out of body experience. I would take the Taco in for a service and complain to the service rep and after I got it back it would drive better for a while and then is was back to shifting into 6th at 30mph and unnecessary downshifting on slight grades. It does this shifting all the way down to 1st and revving to 5500 RPM on accelerating while turning through an intersection from 3rd gear. I call it a "Crazy Ivan" because it's unpredictable. I push on the accelerator and nothing happens....push a little harder and then wham! It's like downshift and revs. Toyota has got to come up with a permanent solution!

    .

Now you have me bummed. I will update if symptoms return, yes "if" not "when" I am being optimistic! If this TSB does not fix, I hope Toyota has a real fix around the corner.

well if its any consolation to the 2016ers my 2017 does the same crap. 2100 miles on it. when i go to stop it downshifts and then shudders to stop. seems to be somewhat decent accelerating. The funny thing is it does not do it all the time just random. i took it to the dealer last saturday and they added fluid and reset the ecu. I asked to run the TSB but they would not because the guy said it was only for 2016 models, i agreed to drive it a few days and see. Saturday and Sunday it did great now its back to doing it again. I did find that driving the S mode and just putting it in 6th gear position it shifts up and down like its butter. Toyota has a serious software issue IMO. I plan to drop it off again soon and have them go at it one more time then its trade in for me.

Just had the update done on my TRDOR this morning.
Where would the dealer have put the Modification Label?

Had mine done in July. No sticker. Should be affixed underside of hood above the breather location. I don't care since TSB only lasted 1500 miles.

I've scheduled an appointment for next week. Had the first TSB performed back in July and now have the cold 3rd to 4th shift flare, not every time, but it's happened about half a dozen times since they claimed to have checked my fluid level and it was half a quart low about a month ago, which I don't believe they checked it and wouldn't think a half quart would make any difference at all. If I continue to have transmission issues after this latest software update I will be pursuing the AZ Lemon Law, I'll be damned if I'm paying 44k for a truck that shifts like this. I also can't stand the tick tock, tick tick tock, sound of this engine, I don't care if its the cleaning of the injectors, it's bs. I'm also taking it back to the dealer I purchased it from, as per the wording in the law.
