There is still a very faint howl from the new diff but nowhere near what it was before. The TSB for the shift feeling enhancements still doesn't feel 100%. Sometimes it will seem confused about what gear to be in. Also sometimes when I have to stop on a decline or drive in stop and go traffic I go to give it gas and it still hasn't downshifted into 1st and lurches. Overall it's a big improvement, maybe there will be another software update down the road. Maybe the reason for the gear ratio change in the 2017?

    Pretty much stock...
Wait what? They changed after the first year?

What are the ratios for 2016 & 2017?

I don't think there is any gear ratio change, the manual and automatic are different if that is what he meant.

Hey has anyone tried adding a diff additive to their gear oil, wonder if it will help? Does the 2016 OR call for it doesn't say anything in the manual but neither did my Tundra and that called for it according to the dealer and various Tundra forums.

It will work to invalidate your warranty if Toyota finds out; not sure if it will work in any other fashion

I understand that but my question was does the 2016 OR tacoma call for the additive to be added to the diff with the gear oil. From my understanding my truck has a limited slip differential and isn't that required with that.

I know my 08 sport manual required it, my 15 and now 16 have no mention. I would advise against, not that your service writer would know but if they notice a different fluid they could blame your diff issue on that. Reason I didnt touch mine when I took mine in for it, guy even told me good call. I don't think its a fluid or fluid weight issue as much as a tolerance issue with the gearing. We likely won't know till a few years from now when someones shits the brick if its a design/manufacturing flaw or just a noise characteristic. On another note are you stationed on JBMDL, I parked next to a BR OR today at the gym with florida plates like yours.

See my post on page 2 of this thread. Just because its a "characteristic of the vehicle" does NOT mean its not a problem that needs to be addressed. All they are doing, in my opinion, is admitting that its a widespread issue affecting most of their vehicles.

Think about it: if its occurring often enough that Toyota now considers it a "characteristic" then they are admitting that its happening more often than its not. If anything it hurts their case.

Sounds like they have no idea why and until something fails they are going to sit on their hands.

I think, with the number of people sitting on their second diff, they are more worried about the lemon law liability with a third replacement.

Someone's crunched the numbers, and they are more willing to risk a failed diff than risk people returning their trucks as lemons.

I doubt they are still scratching their head back at HQ. They have some of the best mechanical engineers and top mechanics available to troubleshoot. I bet they figured this out in a couple of months (at the most). They've probably done a CBA on what it would take to fix it moving forward and how to go about fixing it as part of a TSB/recall. I also wouldn't be surprised if there are share-price related reasons for delaying the fix. They just announced that lawsuit loss. Announcing a significant recall in the first 2 years of a new model or right after an announcement like that is not good for the stock price.

Not to mention, Toyota seems to be on a 3-year cycle. so I'd put money on it being corrected in the '18 model.

Did you have the howl before you switched? If you are telling me that the redline FIXED the problem, then I'll have some put in tomorrow.
