Were you able to reinstall that side shock on the dash compartment door, after installing the cabin filter? Mine doesn't seem to want to stay attached, but leaving it off just means the door slams open.

Yes, both for my Taco and the wife's 'Runner. Taco was pretty straightforward and the 'Runner was slightly more tricky but completely do-able.

It finally dawned on me recently to change this. It took me all of 2 minutes to do it. I'm the original (procrastinating) owner, and I spent $25 for the part at the dealer. It was nasty. The air into the cabin flows much better now, it's noticeable.

Do you have a link to this charcoal filter? I have honestly never heard of doing this and I am intrigued.

Take some time to put some mesh over the intake under the windshield cowl so you don't have rats living in there like I discovered today

    vvv

That weird rat piss smell makes sense all of a sudden

The longest part of this change for me is taking everything out of the glove box...

I remember my first service at the dealer they wanted somewhere in the ballpark of $60 to replace it...

I think that's what made me realize the dealer if full of shit. Figured as long as I document and keep receipts, I would be warranty complaint!

My dealer wanted $30 which is the cost of a a OEM filter. Still too much. When I took it in for the free oil changes I told them up front not to waste their time or mine showing me the filters.

I scrubbed the seats and used fabreeze.
I also put candle wax in a Tupperware and le it melt in the sun.

Would you know if it's easy to buy a screen like that made of stainless steel? Good job!

I just used some hardware cloth and bent it with pliers and flashing vice grips , its not too difficult , any mesh style thats not super thick should be similar

I sealed the back and sides with metal ducting tape and will add 2 bolts through the factory tabs at the front tomorrow

Are you sure they were rats or could they have been mice? Now that you blocked the entrance to their nice cozy filter home.....watch out for a home invasion. :quickdraw:

I'll just put the cowl back on and hopefully never have to go in there again
