I have to say this article messes me up a little. While both the mouth and manager need to be slapped repeatedly....it makes me think about something my family and I just discussed. My Father was a Vietnam vet that saw A LOT of combat. I don't even know how to describe how many things he was a part of and was definitely affected by. First thing is that I only saw or learned about him crying over something twice in my entire life. First time was 30 years ago over something family related. The second time was recently in August during his final days in hospice care. He was given a medal that the facility had specially made for Vietnam vets and when it was presented to him, he lost it. Now....that last one is the thing that messed me up and not for obvious reasons you would assume. If you did not know my dad personally...you would never in a million years know that he served in the military. Oh he was definitely proud but not a peep about it. These days many veterans scream for entitlement to be acknowledged and the problem I have is that I believe they deserve it but I am still messed up over the fact that my Dad had such tremendous character for not feeling that way. I truly do not know how to feel about these incidents.

There was a forced cultural stigma on Vietnam vets. Protesters applied the hate they felt to the policies that has us involved upon the men and women who served that many shut down regarding that stage of their lives. My dad served 18 months over there, flew 117 missions when the requirement was only 50, earned two Distinguished Flying Crosses, and had to change clothes in Hawaii so he wouldn't get spat on in San Francisco when changing planes. Fortunately society as a whole got wiser during Desert Storm, and my return was the exact opposite of his.

Many survivors felt shame over their participation, and that wasn't their fault either. Until very recently the military wasn't keen on providing mental health support in a way that didn't negatively affect careers. I still shut out some things I saw in Bosnia and Saudi - things definitely not worth remembering. Everyone copes the best way they can because life goes on.

These small gestures on behalf of businesses are their way of thanking the current generation of veterans while also in some VERY small way apologizing to the Vietnam generation.

Your dad was doing the absolute best he could in the environment and support structure he had. I am thankful for his service, and sorry for your loss. You have every right to be proud of your father, and I'm sure he and my Dad will be swapping stories and telling lies in Heaven.

I remember reading about that death this summer, though the full story hadn't been revealed. He'd just "fallen in" at the time.

Nature has many ways to kill you if you're dumb (or unlucky) enough to let it.

I was there when it happened...well not there there but I was in the park at the time. Happened in Norris Basin, kid had worked for one of the hotels or something so he should have known better.
