Got my 04 Prerunner last week and found out it doesn't have anything special in the rear end. Since it's 2WD what's the best option for winter driving and maybe a little mud if the wife let's me? :D I looked at the Detroit True Trac already and found it for $430.00. Also, how hard are they to install for someone that can do most mechanical work by myself?

I don't have any experience with the tru-trac, but it appears to be a diff-carrier change. Along with the installation of the carrier, would require a gearing setup also. Gearing setups can be expensive and should be done by a professional installer.

I'm surprised I still haven't gotten a real answer from an expert. I'd like to get a new differential in there before winter. The other rear ends are nice, but not functional for getting through the snow. :)

Shhh! the wife thinks I dont do mods on trucks anymore
one rear end in your hands is better than two in the bush
    Sorry just had to.

lockers rock and will make a world of differnce offroad.
If you dont have four wheel drive or are a way above avegage driver then you need four wheel drive if you really go offroad.
Not saying you cannot get to cool places with two wheel and a locker just saying apples and oranges

Not all Pre-runners have an e- locker or LSD. It's available as an option and mine doesn't have either apparently. I found one site that reviews different vehicle and their archives had the 04 Taco and states that they have LSD standard...another site though, has what looks like an original factory printed brochure PDF and it states that it is optional.
