Yea. with less backspacing the tire gets pushed closer to body while turned.

 

Where did you dig that up? I like that.

Here. And you will need this chart to determine the actual offset/backspacing for the wheel you are running.

the SCS Ray10 in 16"x8.5" is a 4.00 backspacing which is equal to -19 offset. I actually did yours wrong, using -12 offset. Using the correct offset, we get this...

Now look at your tire compared to mine, it will actually rub the frame the same as mine, but, the scrub contact on the fender will be huge. Mine is green, your is orange.

Width is actually worse. As you turn it'll put the tire even more into the body and frame then a tall skinny tire like a 255/85.

I have 255/80r17 and barely rub though it's a true 33.

My dad had 305/70r17s. They are big tires. Be hard to fit on a 1st gen without tubbing.

Here is the 305 you talked about compared to @Blackdawg and the 255 he's running.
Keep in mind the different wheel sizes. the 255 looks like it might be a better fit for what you are trying to accomplish. It's also a touch taller.
305 in orange, 255 in green. Assuming the 17x8.5 is -10 offset

 

I like the 255 size. Fits well and tall.

I still don't personally love the feel of skinny tires offroad persay..but no other complaints really.

 

Skinny tires? But the chicks and Jeep owners at the mall will only be impressed by at least 12.50 wide tires that are only half covered by your fenders.

I saw those, I may run the 17" SCS rims and the 255. I like the wider look but I'd rather be a tad taller and not have rubbing issues. But I've got a few months to go before I have to decide. I am taking the options you guys have given me into consideration.

I still rubbed and had to smash the pinch weld with 255. Only when flexing though, street driving was fine.

 

I plan on smashing the shit out of the pinch weld, but I may go with what Monte has and do the 255/80 R17 and either get the F5's in 3.5 bs or SR8's in 4.3 bs. Get the tallest/skinniest that limits rubbing.

Well, @Delta00 isnt rubbing frame with 3.5 and I am a little with my wheel+wheel spacer equivalent of 4.0 bs

 

I rub at high flexing stuff too. But not too bad all things considered. I'll take it for the extra height.

Saved my ass more then once on my last trip.

 

Shit I forgot @Blackdawg doesn't have his Ray10's on yet because those and the SR8's have same backspacing.
