Hey Guys, I joined to ask if anyone else is having a problem with their 2017 3.5L shuttering/jerking under acceleration. When I leave home in the mornings, I turn onto the highway headed uphill and the truck jerks and surges as the engine accelerates. It has been cool here in the mornings...40-50deg and the engine does not have much time to warm up, but I feel the problem even after the engine is at temp, it is just not as bad. I have the 6spd MT and the problem can be felt through the RPM range. It is much more noticeable when under strain (ie accelerating uphill), and it is worse when cold. In addition, I have noticed that at idle, it will "miss" causing the whole vehicle to shake, but immediately smooth back out. After a few moments, it will "miss" again, but again recover for a few moments.

I let the dealer look at it today and they said they felt the shutter under a load but not the "miss" when idling. They supposedly took a new truck off the lot and drove it under similar conditions and observed the new vehicle also shuttering under load and decided that it was "normal", so nothing was done.

So, just wondering if anyone here has felt the jerking and surging when under load. I have not personally experienced this with any other vehicle I have ever owned and feel that this is NOT normal, but maybe it is with Tacoma?????

    Thoughts or ideas?

It shouldn't be normal, but I think it is. Mine does that too sometimes. Mild but annoying when it happens.

Mine does it when the engine isn't quite up to operating temperature or when the A/C is on. Usually right around 2000 rpm.

I also have the same problem MT with only 1585mi on it. I always let the truck warm up completely. I never stomp on the gas to the floor and never go over 4000rpm. I find the issue around the 2500 - 3500 RPM range while in the middle gears 2,3,4. If i moderately press the gas in 2nd it will almost struggle to take off then hit 2500rpm or so and just really take off. It does that in 2nd and 3rd the most but I drive 3mi to work every morning so i never really get going to fast.

I have not had the problem. 700miles and I do stomp on it and at times take the engine to close to redline. I babied it for about 300 miles after that I drive it like it will be drove the rest of its life (hard). Does it do it if you engage ECT power? Oh, I do let mine warm up and I have the auto trans.

My 2016 TRD OR 6MT had this problem at 950 miles. However, it completely went away. As I was driving to trade the truck in for the PRO, at 3750 miles it was surging/virbrating REALLY bad. Trade in done at 3800 miles. It is the second owners problem.

My 2017 PRO 6MT hit 1075 miles today. No issues to report so far.

    *Chevron 91 used always.

You didn't say how many miles you had. My truck was jerky/sputtery like a 30 year old truck that needed a tune-up early on. Took it in twice to two different dealers. Both said it was normal for tacomas. Being new to the tacoma, I really didn't know how to respond other than a shocked wtf look. It has improved, and that behavior is much less frequent.
The non-smooth acceleration (feeling like you hit a TURBO button at around 2500 rpm) does not change in my experience so far.

Mine doesn't surge exactly. But if I floor it and it is accelerating though the entirety of the RMPs from stopped it seems to lurch forward and give a big kick at 3,000 rmps and again at 4,500 RPM's. When in ECT power mode this lurching disappears.

That a better example of what mine does as well. I was curious if an intake and exhaust might give the low end rpms a little better kick to match the higher rpms.

I have the same or very similar issue in my 2016 DC TRD OR. It's really the only thing I don't like about the truck. I've tried to find out in other threads what the problem is with no solution. Everyone who rides in my truck feel it too.

Mine does the shudder from 1100-1800k under slight acceleration. It's worse/happens more frequently with the AC on.

When I took it in for the 5k I described the issue in detail to the service advisor. He said every 3rd gen Tacoma coming in has the same complaint or some other tranny complaint. He said it was a "gear hunting" issue. Whatever it is, I'll be trading my Tacoma for either a 2015 or for a Tundra unless they come up with a TSB soon. I'm a huge Toyota fan but this issue has me wishing I would have just gone with the Tundra.

For now, the only solution for me is to put in S4 and use the ECT button...or to put it into S4 and just stomp on the gas.

The surging is likely a result of learned fuel and timing trims due to detontation and the ECU is trying to keep pinging under control.

Vibrations are probably due to increased axle wrap in lower gears changing angles enough to give a harmonic vibration.

Both are likely symptoms we will all experience and thus, as designed...aka...normal.

Could the learned trims in the ECU be cleared and then relearned to fix the surging? I do not have the gear hunting, vibration, or the surging. I do have the shitty gas mileage (16.3 mixed). I would clear the ECU make sure I am using the recommend gas and give it some miles to relearn. If most people are having this issue I hope they are open tickets with Toyota.
