Good question, would it have to do with suspension? Can't the GVWR increase with new suspension?

When you hit a bump or pothole or a ditch how does this effect the load on a tire? I guess I would compare it to us, if we stand our weight is even, if we fall forward, lung, jump, weight increased more or less based on activity.

Given that tires are what keep us on the road, I would definitely want a tire that is rated more than the truck for safety.

Of course. Logical to consider, easy peasy to test.

    No, he's correct.

Simple example. On a racy little ride I ran Toyo TS1s 10 years ago. They had awesome grip. They had a compliant ride. But they had soft sidewalls. So the only way they'd pass a rollover chalk test for closed course driving was with significantly higher pressures. I continued to use them for my street tires.

Moved to Falken Azenis 615s (same era technology) which had MUCH stiffer sidewalls and considerably more grip. They were not track friendly tires (got greasy when hot) but they were killer on autox. Anyway, that tire could be almost flat before the sidewall started to deflect. Even at modest correct pressures you could tell it was stiffer when on the street.

So yes, stiffer sidewalls require less pressure to hold equal weights and performance.

You may call it anecdotal. I call it race proven.

BTW, calling a tire manuf. for info isn't a bad thing. But remember who's answering the phone. One of the lower paid employees who is answering your questions with a script. Not an engineer.

Right... but I would think the safety factor would already be built into the tire's load rating... most manufactured items are not made to 1:1 safety factors... usually 2:1 or 3:1 :notsure:

Good experience there, I can't deny the anecdote but I can disagree based on my own experience specially with truck tires and oversized offroad tires. I've seen more superswamper sidewalls fail over most other tires, yet they have the same ply rating, psi, etc. This is why I'll never own any, others can disagree.

As fas as the manufacturing script, they use a tire inflation chart created by Engineers, and while I mean no disrespect to anyone here, I'll take the word of a tire inflation chart provided by the manufacturer over random anecdotes and a guy who simply mounts them.

While some of this discussion has been productive I must move on to other things. People will agree and disagree and at the end of the day it doesn't really matter unless we find something to take from it.

This thread is mildly off topic so hopefully the OP has what they are looking for and hopefully answered their question

It's got a cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.
So what exactly are you arguing? you say that stiffer sidewalls suport more weight. so using that logic we should be running LESS pressure than passenger tires because of those big bad sidewalls.

Look, i dont give a shit about load ratings. what i am interested is "what is the best psi to run on the street". that takes into account ride quality, rolling resistance, mpg, tread wear, etc.

You can drive around with 30psi all you want. but i am telling you the outside will wear more than center, youre mpg will be shit, and the ride will be worse than at a higher pressure. i know youre head is exploding right now and youre lunging toward your keyboard to tell me "the ride quality is worse with higher pressure, etc". my response to that is i have tried it both ways, and can say with absolute certainty that i disagree. those stupid engineers who build the tires do too. but i know thats a bit inconvenient for you. its almost like you refuse to acknowledge any difference between passenger tires and e rated tires. you cant wrap your mind around the fact that they require different pressures. now that you have educated me, i think im just going to run 35psi in every single tire that i own. race bike? 35. dirt bike? 35. trailer? 35. camry? 35. 18 wheeler? 35. tractor? you guessed it. THIRTY FUCKIN FIVE BABY!

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

    GOTTA LOVE THOSE STIFF SIDEWALLS

Furious. and since 6psi aint worth a damn, i might run them bitches at 29. or 41. but you sure as hell wont catch me running 47 now that i have seen the light. lawd help me jesus
