So when is Thanksgiving? Just took this picture, they are about 40 yards from the deck in the ravine. So tempting....

 

I try to stay on the road, well at least keep it between the trees! 10 miles of hell, but it looked easy enough going in...



Shot a lot of grouse back in there from the spur trails that come off from it.

When I was on the West coast agree with Andy on armor. Even the Appalachians have some trails that would give the rock crawlers a run for their money. Armor of any type adds weight but when you need it is worth its weight in gold. Where I mainly hunt and take logging trails it is trees that I worry about and lateral slides from icy trails. Plate bumper would be great but all it does is take out the legs of a moose and it will be coming in the windshield. So I am setup for where I spend the most time.

I have bolt on sliders from 4x4 innovations for tree protection and had them built with zero offset and filler plate so the dog can get in and out easy enough.



Mainly Canadian Shelf here so not so worried about rocks and high centering on the pumpkins, etc. Beavers and flooding the roads are my main concern and what I can and can't drive through when filled with water. This was easy enough, sometimes the road is washed away which is real fun at night LOL.



Different areas of the country have different requirements for armor IMO. But it all comes at the cost of weight. Which can be worth it. Or not.

 

Tell me about the dog platform in the back. I have an access cab, and want to do something similar.

Thanks Tim! Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever or Toller for short, the pink nosed one in the picture is now 2. The black nosed in my avatar sitting in an empty 12 pound keg of gunpowder is almost 13. Been around the breed for almost 30 years now and am obviously hooked. They are a handful at times but love them.

I have some more information from the build back here not sure if the dimensions will work for you though. I ripped out the seats and headrests and hinged almost all of it. Bolted the frame to the body so it is solid. Have a cushion on top of it and the dog loves it. In SD hunting kept moving dog crates around between vehicles and he always went to the driver's door to get let inside LOL. Don't blame him though! Under it I keep my guns and hi lift jack. Any questions let me know and be glad to answer what I can!

 

That's just awesome. I was thinking something that left the seats in place, and was removable, that way I could have both the jump seat and the platform functionality. I need a place for my guitar(s) to ride when I'm going to/from jam sessions.

But you design might just change what I thought I wanted. I presume it would be a fairly simple matter to make the underneath lockable?

 

It would be easy enough to put a locking hasp on it I would think. May be a more elegant solution but that is the first thing that comes to mind. What I like is that the guns are out of sight by anyone walking by and most people wouldn't concern themselves with what is under it. Or that may be my wishful thinking on my part...
