I honestly think if lightning were to strike, it would likely hit the really large metal truck, not your tent. Not saying that it wouldn't scare the living crap out of all in the vicinity, but I think you'll survive. I've been in 3 nasty storms (2 wind, 1 wind/thunder/rain) and the tent handled them like a champ. I keep ear plugs in the tent pockets b/c otherwise I think it would be impossible to sleep from the noise. Be sure to take the window rods out b/c they WILL bend in high wind. Also, I ratchet down the overhang from the top of the ladder and around my tire. It does act like a sail and you will feel your truck lifting in really high winds. Not off the ground of course, but you will certainly feel the sensation of the "sail effect." Also, some have been folded up on in their tent, which is why I take the precaution. These tents have such thick canvas, they really do handle wind and water amazingly.

My Tepui Autana held up pretty well in a BAD rainstorm, but like you said the annex roof collected water, big time, and actually seeped through or found some other hole and had pooled up in the bottom floor area. Not fun. :(

Okay so! Sorry if this has been gone over before but it's been 100 plus pages since I last checked in on this thread. @Chux and myself aren't going to let winter stop us from getting out and exploring. One way or another we'll be out there but every little bit helps. I'm just curious if anyone has any experience with the new cvt cold weather hood? In my mind it should help a lot I'm just concerned that it could get swampy in there and was wondering if there is any type of vents or what people have experienced so far. image.jpg

I just ordered my RTT so all I can offer are some thoughts without any firsthand experience yet. I have two little ones, the oldest being a couple months shy of 5. Currently he's the only one I take camping with me. In a couple years I plan on bringing his sister along also. (Mom will likely stay home...). First, I don't have any fears of them falling out. For one, it'll be zipped up so there's no where to go. Also, the way they're set up, it'll likely be your feet pointing at the doorway (or maybe your head) and people typically don't fall out of bed by sliding down. And second, I had questions about size also. My test was to grab the two of them and lie down on a bed together. From what I've seen, most RTT mfgs have a couple standard sizes: ~55" wide and ~75" wide. A full size mattress comes in at about 54" wide. I think a king is 76." It was clear after lying down on the full together that a 55" would be a bit too snug. Doable, but very cozy. Geo has 65" so I went with that (slightly bigger than a queen). If you're looking to fit 4, I'd think you'd want at least a 75." The other alternative is to do what I intend to should my wife ever join us, is to just bring along my 2-man tent also. Girls can have the RTT and the boys will get the ground. A small RTT also means less weight and drag so better mpgs and it's cheaper.

If they are really little...we have used zip ties on the side windows and back door to keep the kids from falling or opening them up. They have played with the zipper but it wont open up.

I've lived thru plenty of storms....several times lying in my tent wondering if I'll be the first to die in an RTT. wind is the worst. You swear the tent is getting ripped to shreds (70 mph+ gusts) while you hear trees cracking and falling...tent is fine the next morning. Almost got eaten alive by my tent when a wind gust picked up the ladder end and started to shut the tent. That was fun, learned to take wind direction into account when setting up camp. Lightning sucks but I've lived thru a storm that was so close my hair was standing on end from the static in the air and the thunder clap was coming instantaneously to the lightning strike and I was parked in the middle of a meadow, no trees around.

you'll be fine, probably safer than bunk beds. My friend's little boys love the tent and have been playing in it for years - Since they were 2 and 4. Whenever I visit I set it up for them and they love to hang out up there. It's a fort, space ship...whatever... Just no jumping and they gotta ask for help to come down (leave a baby monitor up there). Took them camping this year and they did great.
