Check Your U-Bolts

I checked mine out of curiosity and low and behold 6 of the 8 bolts
were perfect but 2 were at 39 ft/lbs - they should be at 52 ft/lbs.
Interesting that the ones that were not to spec were the front pair on each side.
Mine is an SR5. You will need a deep socket 19mm

After monitoring this thread for almost a year I decided to slap the torque wrench on there today. 7 of 8 were between 37 and 45 with the last at 50. Brought them all to 55. (15K mi)

 

Huge thanks to splitbolt and TW. Did mine today and found more of the same... 7 of 8 needed to be brought up to 52 foot pounds. Loosened and re-torqued the 8th one for good measure.

If you haven't checked yours yet, do it. It's so easy my six year old helped out.

I have recently developed a loud clunking in the rear going over minor bumps, this didn't use to happen, could this be the u bolts loosening? It didn't start until after applying fluid film to the underside to prevent rust a couple months ago. I don't have a torque wrench, so I will get one tomorrow, and since I have never used one, how to know when I have reached the correct torque? Thanks for any help.

 

More than likely, you'll end up with a clicker type torque wrench...they click when the desired torque has been reached.
Use a 4 point torque pattern, start at 32 ft lbs and increase in 10 ft lb increments until 52 ft lbs is achieved.
Store wrench at 'zero' setting.

 

Ok, thanks. The 4point torque pattern, are you referring to working each bolt to 32 then using an x pattern to tighten all to 52?

I checked mine and tested torque on the bolts. 2017 TRD OR MT

6 were at 75 ft lbs. 2 were at 35.

I set all 8 to 75.

 

Just checked mine, 2017 ORDC, seems they were set about 52 all around, only have about 300 miles on though

 

Just checked mine also 2016 trd access cab 4x4 six loose two torque sad this is the best taco can do one unhappy owner no telling what else is loose also greased front u- joints while under truck no rear drive shaft grease fittings

 

Thanks splitbolt as well as all you good people that provided helpful input. Picking up my new 2017 SR5 Access Cab 4x4 at the dealership Wednesday. Going to go over checking the torque with the technician before leaving the lot and then I'll recheck in 2,000 miles. I'll probably be under the rig on Wednesday checking every damn bolt and screw I can find!

Just picked up the new rig yesterday. The tech and I went over all the U-bolts with a torque. 52 ft./lbs! On the money!

I just checked my 2016 OR with 8k miles and setting the torque wrench to 54 lb-ft, the bolts were all fully torqued.

 

My 2017s bumped slightly with the torque set at 60lbs. I put my 4 way lug wrench on the lugnuts afterwards and moved nearly all of them a bit. Some more than others. They were a bit looser than I liked.

 

52 ft-lbs does sound a little loose. I know it's a different application/scenario, but the first time I installed new wheels on my Accord I torqued the lugnuts to 50 ft-lbs. I then joined a mini-rally through the back-roads of Wisconsin. When we finished I checked my wheels and half the lugnuts spun freely... i'm lucky I didn't lose any lugnuts (or an entire wheel for that matter)! Now I torque my lugs to 80...

 

Checked mine today, 7 were good , 1 was bad, retorqued to 52-56 foot pounds. +/- 4% on my torque wrench.

 

What would you recommend a sr5 v6 2016 to be set at?

 

Spec is 52 ftlb

 

My taco is 4x2. People are saying check your u bolts if you have a 4x4 trim. Does it apply to mine
