As the title states, has anyone traded in an auto 3rd gen for a manual? When I purchased my 2017, there wasn't a manual V6 within 250 miles of DFW. I was scared to order a truck I had never test driven. Now I fear I made a mistake, curious if anyone has any experience with making the trade and if you feel it was worth it in the end.

Have you driven a manual transmission vehicle before? Did you like it? If so I think you will be fine.
I have a 2017 TRD OR 6MT on order. I too couldn't test drive before ordering it. I'm stationed in Korea at the moment. But I have owned a MT car before and I previously owned a Tacoma before. I ain't never scared!

Yea, I have owned a few manual cars but never a truck. I have always enjoyed having a manual however when I purchased my Jeep a few years back I had my heart set on a manual. Then I drove both back to back and realized I hated the manual transmission in the Jeep and was very happy with the auto. The auto actually felt like it had quite a bit more power on the butt dyno. I guess I have always preferred a manual in sportier vehicles and not trucks.

im thinking about trading. havent decided yet. I dont think im ready to take the financial hit on trading something especially due to the fact its an engineering and design issue with the auto.

what are people typically getting for trade in value on their 2016 trd sport or OR with approx 5000 miles.

I used to sell jeeps. I can tell you the JK 6MT left a lot to be desired. It was pretty bad compared to most modern MT's. But if you had a newer JK with the Mercedes sourced 5 speed auto I tend to agree with you. That's a pretty good auto especially for a jeep.
I have read a lot of favorable reviews on the new 6MT in the 3rd gen. So I wouldn't worry.

Ordered the manual with out test driving. In fact my sales guy "forced" me to test drive the auto, I drove it about 3 miles, listening to him try to sell it to me. We got out, he asked what I though, I said, the same thing before I got in, I want a manual, do you want my money?

We ordered after that, got it November 1st, my only issue is the location of R or lack of lock system to get to R. Haven't owned an auto trans in 20 years, went from 09 5 speed taco to this 6 speed 17 Taco.

The real question is it worth the financial hit to trade, if your willing to take that, then there is no question.

    all tore up already
i bought a MT truck and didnt understand so much hate for tacomas. then i got stuck with an AT loaner. after leaving the dealership, my first stop i checked under the hood to confirm all 6 cylinders were installed. i counted and recounted and still couldnt believe the difference. the only "plus" for the AT was i was constantly going too fast because the truck loves to upshift

There is a new calibration out for the transmission. It just came out and people are seeing improvement.

Totally agree, I got a pretty solid deal, but I still think it would be a few thousand dollar hit. I just wish I could find one in the in my area to drive to make the decision easier.

Yea I knew about the revision. I had the original TSB done and to be honest it felt awesome for about a week, then it seemed to "revert" back to shifting like crazy. I also personally think it is going to be hard to fix the issue with the autos without re-gearing the truck. The autos just end up so low in the rev range that the truck has no other option but to constantly shift.

After this forum convinced my truck and the transmission sucked I almost traded mine in. I even had the paperwork ready to sign. Trading an off road access cab (fully loaded) for a base model 4 door off road at a 4K loss.

Then realized it's not that bad to take the hit and I like my truck and the access cab (can't get an access cab manual off road). Occasionally mine is annoying but most of the time it's just shifting like it should. I have a set of 4.88's waiting to go in hopefully that helps a little.

I don't blame you, not sure I would be willing to take the hit. I think the 4.88 will make a HUGE difference. It will bring the RPM a lot closer to the torque curve. Only scary thing is no longer having that warranty with all the rear diff issues the 3rd gen is having.

I don't know what the root cause on the factory diff problem is, but I figure if I'm replacing gears and bearings and doing the setup, there shouldn't be anything left in there that Toyota needs to warranty.

I did, had a 16 gen 3 auto.. hated it. Put 15k miles of pure frustration on it. Traded it in on a 17 TDR OR 6 speed. Took a small but worth while hit. I have put 5000 miles on the off road in the last 2 months, no regrets so far. That auto can suck it!

If you don't mind me asking, how bad of hit did you take? I also have TRD OR auto so could give me a good idea.

I lost $2.5K. But I also put 15k miles on it. Might not be worth it for everyone. But the upgrade was well worth it for me.
