Dakars + AAL Users

Looking for feedback on this setup on a second gen.

Running Dakars w/ Dx29l extra leaf, bed rack and RTT, measure 26.5" hub to fender

 

25" center of hub to fender with a whole lot of weight in the back. I feel every little bump, but it eats up the big ones smoothly. I have mine paired with B110 shocks.

 

I had the addaleaf in with an extended top shell, sleeping set up, high clearance plate bumper with swing gate and took the add a leafs out recently. Made the ride stiff, aesthetically I thought the rake looked bad, and got some annoying vibes I couldn't get rid of after I put them in. After taking them out, suspension feels smoother, truck levelled out better and the take off shudder I had isn't noticeable anymore. If I recall I was around 25.5". Both of my leaf packs are over spec. After I took them out I lost about 3/4 inch of lift in the rear.

I'm running 225/235 lbs of constant load. Mainly looking at the possibility of more altitude.. though the AAL adds 15% more capacity to the packs, which I wouldn't mind. Not at the cost of horrible ride though.

 

Removing the AAL has been on my mind. I have more rake than I'd prefer - 2". I also have air bags that are currently at 5 pounds. Either the bags or the AAL will come out in the next year or so, and a shackle flip will go in. I keep at least 400 pounds in the bed at all times. I've had the truck level once. I was towing a fairly large load of firewood on my 5 x 11 trailer.

 

Go with a full pack.

 

Unladen, the Dakars + DX29L leaf offer a good ride, IMO. Perhaps a bit more stiff than stock, and maybe better than the Icon leaf pack, but still comfortable. Under load, the Dakars hold up very well and the overall ride improves a bit.

Again, my opinion based upon my experience.

Any constant load weight on your truck, like a shell or armor?

 

AAL w stock suspension

I have a lumber rack, 100-150lbs of tools, air compressor, and other misc supplies at all times(so ~300lbs constant or more). I like the ride. I used to bottom out on big dips, not anymore.

Not on the PreRunner, which has the Dakars. However, I have shoehorned up to two CBRs (approximately 400-800lbs plus pertinent gear and equipment) in the bed countless times, in addition to an ungodly amount of crap over the years. I understand it's not a constant load, but for all the trials my wife and I have put our PreRunner through, zero issues.

I will be redoing the suspension on my 4wd this coming year, and the Icon leaf springs are being replaced by Dakars. The 4wd has front armor, sliders, and soon, a rear bumper and a rack for RTT/random shit.

 

@OZ-T runs Dakars, and judging from his build thread, he hauls everything from lumber to stone to dead bodies in the back, and I don't recall him saying anything about the ride quality suffering. He has a cab too, IIRC. Hopefully he can chime in.

 

I don't think he's running the AAL.

I'm mainly curious to hear if the ride quality with a similar constant load to mine is not enjoyable. I have used my Dakars with 1200 lbs of stuff in the bed and they've been great, so I would utilize the AAL on a frequent basis.. but normal day to day, no extra weight besides my shell (225 lbs +/-), will I hate the ride?

I've had the Dakars with AAL on my truck now for about 4 years. I don't really carry any extra weight in my bed besides my spare (315/70/17) and a front runner box with tools. I absolutely love the ride. My wife uses the truck as her DD and she says it rides great. Off-road it still flexs great in my opinion as well.
