Can you imagine? These were headed to the dumpster...

Now to pair them with reels and line and learn a new addiction.

Is there a need to have both 3# rods?

For a beginner, I'd generally say no. But you have them, so keep them. You may end up liking one over the other once you improve your casting.

I'd learn on your 5wt.....3wts are more difficult to feel the road loading.

Can I just get one reel with 3# line and interchange the rods or should I do something different?

Thanks in advance for the assistance. :fistbump:

I also have a full 8wt outfit...bought it on impulse. It's 8wt because I live on the coast and lots of flats to catch reds and sea trout.

I only use my 3wt for small streams....so I just have one reel with floating line. If I need to get deep, I just use a sinking leader. No need for another reel with sinking line.

Again, the actions may be quite different and each rod may like/perform better with different line.

For someone new, I'd just pick the one you like and match it up with the line best suited for the type of fishing you'll be doing.

You could take them all to a fly shop and they should be able to explain the action of each of those rods and could help pick reels & line.

Will do. I'll take it to the outfitter where I bought mine from. Felt good there as they didn't try to upsell me...in fact, tried to start me off on something less expensive but I upsold myself.

Should I still learn on the 5wt or would the 8wt be ok?

IMO...the 5wt.... primarily to learn the cast. 8wt is much heavier line and could get squirrelly fast if you're not casting correctly. That just leads to frustration.

This is my 25th year of fly-fishing. All self-taught. I wish I had taken a course when I started.

Heck, I took a private class last summer to work out a few minor bad habits that I had developed over the years. Never to old or too late for lessons.

I hope so! I tend to jump in the deep end with everything I do.

It's what I did with golf...lessons from the start.

As I've gotten older, things like lessons, instructions, etc. are a must. Especially with things like fly fishing and golf.

u should capitalize on the free gear by decking them out with some decent
reels and line. No problem switching 3 wt reel between rods but u may consider trading one of the 3s in on a 7 or 8 for bass since both those 3's fill the same niche. I've never cast either of those models but I'd keep the sage ;)

It'll definitely be some nice reels and line.

I already have an Orvis Clearwater 8wt rod and reel thats setup for redfish. Maybe just need a different reel and line for bass? Is the 5wt too light for bass? I was thinking the 5wt would be a good all-around freshwater rig...but just learning fly fishing so unsure.

Definitely keeping the 5wt Orvis and 3wt Sage...and the thought of passing along the Redington to help get the 5wt a reel and line has crossed my mind. I'm also thinking about waiting to see what Black Friday sales pop up before buying new.
