Still new to the Taco scene. I have a 98 3.4 auto running 265/75/16 tires and I'm getting about 13 mpg in the city. Is this normal or should I be getting better? Also are NGK iridium plugs the correct spark plugs for these motors?

Welcome! Same here to Tacomas! I'm not sure if you have the 4wd package, but I'm assuming that will allow for more fuel consumption as well as the tire size. What size are stock tires for your truck(the 265)? On my 99 3.4 2wd, and 30x9.5R15, I get a mix of 19-20 mpg. I used NGK wires, and Denso(std) plugs. I also did notice if my tires weren't inflated properly, I saw a difference in mpg. If it was me, I would do a tune up and change all your fluids. Then, I'm sure your mpg will go way back up.

    ...we'll get there.
I get 18 around the city and about 25-28 on the highway, being light-footed and keeping it around 70 when cruising.

May also want to look at Sea Foam through a vacuum line and cleaning your MAF sensor (not with Sea Foam...).

My single cab 4 x 4 5-speed V6 averaged 18.1 @ 75 MPG on a 300 mile round trip yesterday. 150 miles was into a decent headwind and the 150 back was hauling another taco bed.

Obviously not a good MPG. But mileage has more to do with behavior than setup.:burnrubber:

Mine gets 13 in the city with the AC on. and doing 75 or 80 on the freeway. but I just did a trip with no on ac through the mountains doing 55 to 65 and I got 18 mpg. and I needed a tune up badly.

25 seems too high I agree. The highest I've seen was 23 and I was doing everything I could to maximize mpg.

I'd say anything under 15 and something is wrong with your truck. Likely needs a tune up.

I average 18mpg in the city 24 on the highway, that's with a heavy foot and 80 mph on freeway if I cruise I can get it up to 26-27 not much more this is data retrieved from my scan gauge I've read trip meters and gas consumption along with the information on my average mpg gives me , my 2 second average mpg , and my gallons per hour meter, ive spent hours putting info into the scan gauge and always go back to check its correct after a long trail ride or after a month or so, I also have 150k on the motor and all my vac lines are brand new! I replaced them my self, I want to change the k&n drop in filter to a regular air filter and just change it every oil change, see if that makes any difference

    I have a 3.4

Milwaukee to Madison and back and then some around the town brought me in at 200mi, and just under 8 gal to refill my tank.

Out on a Friday night and back on Saturday morning. I know I had a slight tail wind coming back into town, don't know about my drive out.

Feel free to hate hate hate, but thems my numbers.

We have a lot of these threads lol but yeah, you're city MPG seems low. I have the same truck with the same size tires, supercharger and some added weight (sliders, roof rack, steel rear bumper) and I average 17/18mpg per tank. 15mpg city and 19/20 highway

Completely Stock except for Ranch 5000 Shocks and Struts.
We have a 1999 Tacoma 4x4 Extra-Cab with a 3.4 and the 5-Speed. It has 31 inch by 10.5 inch tires, and it gets 16-18 miles per gallon depending how and where it is used.

Op, do u have a 2x or 4x, auto or manual, 4x and auto running a/c will get shittier mileage for some reason like being heavier and slippage thru torque converter also drag from a/c also tread design of tires, more aggressive thread patterns increase rolling resistance.
Changing fluids to synthetics will help some ,proper tire inflation as well as proper wheel, alignment and minimizing extra weight and reducing drag .coasting to stop as well as slow acceleration from stops, no heavy footing from dead stop make sure air filter is clean ,and maybe a good tune up as well as Maf sensor cleaning and intake cleaning and new pcv valve.

Not to shit on this, but if you have a 3.4L and claim to be getting up to 28mpg...I'm sorry but I'd like to see some actual fuely numbers to believe that. Heck even if you had a 4 banger I'd be shocked
