    ...we'll get there.
I should have been more careful with my initial wording. I have experienced 25-28, but that was on one trip. I implied that I always do, and didn't mean to. I just took my truck out for a 40 mile drive along the same expressway and got 21mpg according to torque.

The gods must have been smiling on me last weekend. I'm $4 poorer, but that much wiser.

Was pretty happy when I broke free of 18 and managed to get 19. Change the oil make sure the tires are rock hard and act like theres an egg taped to the gas pedal...

Then with all the different blends of gas I would only compare fuel mileage with some one local

Another thing as wind resistance increases fuel mileage really goes down on those days with loads higher then the cab mileage drops a few miles per gallon.

Very seldom have I driven the truck that it had less then 800 pounds most times much more

Why I am happy with 10mpg

Yes mine is a 4x4 and I initially thought it might be the spark plugs so I bought NGK iridium plugs because they might be old and burnt out hoping that might help solve the problem

Hmm, idk. I thought the stock V6 is supposed to get around 20 as it is? I wish I could get more than I have been, but hasn't changed. Lowest I've gotten so far was 18.5, but I don't have a lead foot by any means. I really watch how I accelerate and drive. I've only had the truck since September. I'm so thankful because my last truck I was only getting 12.

So I guess my truck is about on par then...96 4x4 5 speed with the 3.4, 31 inch tires. Driving back and forth to work (55-60 mph through hill country) I get 18-20 mpg. On the highway (70-75) I get 17-18 mpg. Is this what I should be seeing?

I wish I could see 28MPG!!! Best I've seen from my 2000 is about 10/19 city/HWY and that is if I'm going really baby like on the petal. Worst I've gotten is about 6/11.. but I'm also aspirating my engine with a GTX3076R turbo. Its fun all the way to the next gas station :p.

28 is fantasy land. I'd have to see it to believe it.

I've got 200k on my 2001 2.4L and I average 25 mpg, split pretty evenly between City and Hwy. I'd be really surprised to hear of V6 4x4's getting anywhere close to that. I used to have a 99 2.7L 4x4 and I only ever got 19, maybe 20 mpg on that one.
The only time, my MPG dropped down below 20, on my 2.4L, was when my parking brake wasn't releasing properly. Took about a week to realize it.. mamma mia. I track all my mileage and fill-ups on a spreadsheet to prevent something like this again. :)

    ^^^ this.

    I had a 97 5 lug 4 banger for a while with pizza cutter tires and a 5 speed. I usually got 27 or 28 on a non-stop hwy trip at 70-75mph.

I call BS on a 3.4L 4x4 getting anything over 21 or 22 (average). Maybe a hyper-miler, running 80 psi, no gear, or going from Tahoe to Sacramento (8000' decrease in elevation) or something you might get in the low/mid 20's. Or maybe just bad at the maths.

If you're getting over 15-17 with a 4x4, you're doing pretty good. Less than that and you either need a lighter right foot, or maybe a timing chain.

You really ought to be getting better mpg on a 4cyl 2wd. I certainly do. 2001 2.4L. What are you driving?

Combination of city highway. No modifications really, 265/70/16s. Changed a lot of stuff out recently just to move up the mpg from the original 12

Speaking of math, are you sure you recalculated based on tire size. Something tells me you didn't.

If you're talking about my old 5 lug, no I did not, because they were oem tires. OEM tires on a 5 lug I call pizza cutters.

My current 4x4 is running 265/75's, which will throw off my odo by about 3% over the oem 265/70's. I don't track my mileage closely enough to worry about 3%.

The 6 lug 2wd's (judging by the 265/70 tires he said he has) don't get that much better mileage than a 4x4 - it's just a 4x4 without a transfer case. So there's a little less weight, and no axles spinning up front, but from what I've seen, it really doesn't matter that much, maybe an mpg or two. Driving style will make more of a difference.
